Volleyball Drops Season Opener at Maryland

Senior Devon Murray led the way with seven kills

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team began to 2016 season Friday evening, Aug. 26, at the Maryland Invite. Taking on tournament host, the University of Maryland, the Eagles (0-1) dropped their season opener, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-19).

As a team, the Green and White hit just .154, compared to the Terrapins .227 kill percentage. The Eagles also trailed in service aces by a 6-3 margin, while EMU held a 2-0 edge in blocks.

Offensively, Eastern Michigan was led by senior Devan Murray's (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) seven kills and .316 attacking percentage, while four other Eagles posted four kills on the night. Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) dished out 23 assists to go along with seven digs, an ace, and two block assists in a stat-stuffing performance. Sophomore Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) chipped in a team-high eight digs to lead the defensive effort.

EMU returns to the court tomorrow, Aug. 27, for two matches against Sacred Heart and Delaware State. The Eagles open the day with a 1 p.m. match against SHU before closing out the weekend at 4 p.m.
