MILFORD, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team mourns the passing of former pitcher Bryan Clutterbuck, who passed away Tuesday, Aug. 23, in Milford, Mich. at the age of 56.
Clutterbuck earned a trio of varsity letters for the then-Hurons from 1979-81. In 1980, Clutterbuck earned All-Mid-American Conference honors as a sophomore going 5-2 with a 2.28 earned run average. Following his junior season (1981) when EMU captured the MAC tournament and qualified for the NCAA regional, Clutterbuck went in the seventh round (176th overall) to the Brewers in the Major League Amateur Draft.
Clutterbuck's minor league career included stops in Butte (Mont.), Beloit (Wis.), El Paso (Tex.) and Vancouver (B.C.) before getting called up to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1986 where he threw a total of 56.2 innings. He then spent parts of the next two seasons in Denver and El Paso before going back to the Brewers in 1989 where he threw a complete game to beat the Minnesota Twins.
Arm issues, however, derailed his career with the Brewers. He spent two seasons playing in Taiwan (1991-92) as well as two seasons in the independent leagues (1994-95).
In total, Clutterbuck pitched a total of 124 innings in the majors going 2-6 with a 4.21 ERA. His minor league record was 66-42.
After retiring, Clutterbuck remained in baseball serving as a general manager for two independent league teams as well as coaching.
