AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team came up just short in its bid for a Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game appearance in a 4-2 defeat to top-seeded Kent State University late Saturday night, May 28, at All Pro Freight Stadium.  The Eagles conclude their season with a 23-36 record, and their first semifinal appearance since 2011.

Eastern had a fantastic start from junior Kevin Shul (Albuquerque, N.M.-Albuquerque Academy (College of Southern Nevada) who took a no decision after pitching a career-high five innings, while only giving up one unearned run and striking out a career-high three hitters.

Offensively, junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) had the big highlight, hitting a solo home run in the sixth, his eighth of the season.  He had the only Eagle RBI, as the other run was scored on KSU errors.

The Golden Flashes struck first in the bottom of the first with an unearned run on a pair of Eagle errors and a Kent hit, giving KSU an early 1-0 advantage.  From there, Shul settled in over the next four innings, not allowing any runs on just three hits while striking out three as well.

His pitching set up the big fly from Stidham in the top of the sixth, a solo blast down the left field line to tie the game at one each.

Following a scoreless sixth inning from the relief pitcher senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Walsh Jesuit), the Eagles broke through for their first lead of the contest on KSU miscues.  On a pop up to short, the infielder dropped the pop fly, allowing senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) to reach second base.

Two batters later, redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) rolled a slow chopper to the shortstop, and the late throw went high and into the stands, allowing McGeein to score, giving Eastern the 2-1 lead headed into the stretch.

Marsinek tossed a clean seventh, but was tagged for a solo home run in the eighth to tie the game at two each in the late innings.  With no outs and a man on first, junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) was called from the pen, but the Flashes were able to take the lead on a double down the right field line.

Later in the inning, KSU added an insurance run making the score 4-2 into the final turn at bat for EMU.  Despite getting a man on with a walk, Kent closed the game, sealing the tough 4-2 defeat.

The game marked the end of the exemplary careers of six EMU seniors, Marsinek, McGeein, Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford), Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.), Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. Jan Jacinto College)),  and Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel).
