EMU finished the season on a winning note
DeKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University's tennis team completed the 2016 season Sunday, April 24, by traveling to Northern Illinois University and coming away with a 4-3 victory. The Eagles swept doubles action and three singles matches to take down the Huskies.
The day began with doubles play, where EMU flew through the three matches, with Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova taking down Adey Osabouhein and Evelyn Youel, 6-3, in the No. 1 position, while Ani Gogvadze and Marie Mayerova dropped Abigail Dekkinga and Michelle Erasmus, 7-5, at No. 2. Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva completed the sweep by defeating Cristina Alvarez and Megan Montgomerie, 6-4, at No.3.
Movie on to singles play, the Eagles came away with three victories. Martinovska won her No. 2 singles match, 6-2, 6-3, to take down Alvarez, while Gogvadze made quick work of Dekkinga, 6-1, 6-2. Mayerova clinched the match for Eastern, knocking off Youel, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 5 spot. Supejova ended her career with a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Osabouhein in the No. 1 position.
"Good to get the win today," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Doubles was strong. We finished the year winning four straight doubles points. Overall it was a disappointing year and a lot of factors weighed in on this. The fact that we won only 2-of-19 three set matches in conference play was a huge factor in all of our close matches. We have 7 underclassman coming back, and we will look for their maturity into next season. Klara ends a fantastic career at EMU, and she will be missed greatly!"
