The Eastern Michigan University tennis team opened up the Mid-American Conference slate with a match versus the University of Akron Friday, March 25, at the Chippewa Racquet Club. The Eagles (3-11, 0-1 MAC) fell to the Zips (11-6, 1-0 MAC), 5-2, as they were only able to come away with wins in a pair of singles contests.

The Green and White opened up doubles play with just one victory as Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) and Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) continued their strong season at No. 1 doubles by taking down Karalina Maksimava and Shannon Newnes, 6-2. The No. 2 and 3 doubles squads were unable to secure victories in their matches, falling 6-3 to the Zips in each.

Eastern had more success in singles play, coming away with a pair of victories. Martinovska led the charge, dropping Newnes, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 3 singles position, while Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) conquered Luisa Echeverry in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot to give EMU their two points of the match. Just Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) was able to take Martina Zerbola to three sets, but eventually fell, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Eastern Michigan continues Mid-American Conference play Sunday, March 27, when the Eagle square off with the Bulls of the University at Buffalo. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Chippewa Club.
