Redshirt Junior Nicholas Barber advanced on to day two
NEW YORK CITY (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team wrapped up its first day of the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday night, March 17 at Madison Square Garden. The Eagles sent four grapplers to the mats throughout the day, with redshirt junior Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edwards) advancing as the lone Eagle on to day two.
The 149 pounder dropped his first match of the day to No. 2 Brandon Sorensen of Iowa by 9-1 major decision, putting him in the consolation bracket. There he matched up with No. 15 and returning All-American Daniel Neff of Lock Haven. Barber was up to the challenge, defeating him by 7-4 decision to continue on to the second day of competition. He now advances to face No. 16 Patricio Lugo of Edinboro tomorrow in the second round of the consolation bracket.
The three other Eagles in the national tournament all lost both of their bouts on the day, ending their 2015-16 seasons. Redshirt freshman Dakota Juarez (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) fell to No. 9 Tanner Weatherman by fall after getting caught in a scramble. He was knocked-out in the consolation bracket after dropping a tough 8-5 decision.
The other two EMU competitors were redshirt senior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) and redshirt sophomore Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) who both lost to ranked opponents in the first round and were eliminated by technical fall in the consolation rounds.
Both wrestlers finished their seasons with 20+ wins, with Abro concluding his career with 91 wins, good for sixth on the all-time EMU list.
Barber continues his run in the consolation round tomorrow inside MSG. The day begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. with each match still being streamed live on ESPN 3.
