It was the second time this season that Eastern defeated Oakland

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory Saturday, March 12, when the Eagles (3-10) broke a seven-match losing streak by defeating Oakland University. The win marks the third for the Green and White this season and the second over the Golden Grizzlies this year.

Eastern began the match with a sweep of doubles play as Ani Gogvadze and Marie Mayerova teamed up at No. 1 to dispatch Tamara Blum and Karine Celis, 6-1, while Andrea Martinovska and Anna Veleva came away from their No. 2 match with a win over Daria Artamanova and Sosia Borcuti, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, the duo of Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna and Renu Sharma took down Maxine Colen and Julianna Guevara, 6-3. With the sweep of doubles action, the Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

EMU's momentum from doubles carried over into singles as well. The Green and White took 5-of-6 matches in singles play, all while sidelining the Eagles' normal No. 1 singles player, Klara Supejova. Gogvadze took over the No. 1 spot for the match, defeating Blum in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, while Martinovska went 6-1, 6-4, in her win over Artamanova in the second singles position. Veleva jumped up to the No. 4 singles spot in the match, but had no difficulty taking down Borcuti, 6-1, 6-3, and Sharma also cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win in the No. 5 spot. Finally, at No. 6, Barcelo defeated Colen, 6-1, 6-2.

"This was a solid performance today," state Head Tennis Coach Ryan Ray. "I think we were hungry to compete again, and start fresh after a tough February. This type of effort can pay off well if we carry into conference competition. We are eagerly awaiting the start in a couple weeks."

The Green and White take a break for nearly two weeks when the University of Akron comes to town for the first Mid-American Conference dual of the season. The Eagles and Zips will take the court Friday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at the Cluadia Wasik Tennis Complex. Should weather become an issue, the match will take place at the Chippewa Racquet Club.
