Baseball Falls to the Bulls 8-4 for Second Straight Night

2/27/2016 9:55:00 PM | Baseball

EMU was out-hit by two for the second straight night as well

TAMPA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) - For the second straight game the Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped an 8-4 decision to the University of South Florida, Saturday night, Feb. 27 at the USF Baseball Stadium. Also for the second straight night, EMU trailed on the scoreboard in hits by two as well.

EMU (3-5) collected five hits on the day, and were once again led by redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw), who had the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-3. Junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) mashed his first homerun of the season, which was a two-run shot. Redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) knocked in the other two runs for the Eagles.

The EMU pitchers, despite giving up seven earned runs, also struck out 10 batters, which was their second most of the season. The USF (4-2) pitchers once again had success fooling the EMU hitters, striking out 16 total.

For the sixth straight game, EMU jump ahead of its opponent in the first inning. After leading 1-0 after one in last night's game, EMU tagged USF for four runs in the first inning tonight. The frame started with a hit by pitch and single with an error that put runners at second and third.

Both runs came in to score on a two-RBI double from Mioduszewski. The next hitter, Montgomery did one better by clubbing a two-run shot to right field. The next three batters went down in order, but the damage was done, as EMU led 4-0.

USF came back in the next inning though, tagging the Eagles for three runs on just two hits. The trouble came from three straight walks yielded by EMU starter junior righty Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh), knocking him out of the game. Coming in his relief was senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.), who got out of the inning and sent the Bulls down in order in the second. After two, EMU maintained the slim 4-3 lead.

The Eagles ran into trouble again in the third when a lead-off single and two-run homerun gave USF its first lead at 5-4. Meanwhile the USF starter settled in, not allowing another EMU hit until the fifth inning, which was immediately erased by a double play. However Wilson went unscathed in the fourth and fifth, keeping the score at 5-4 through five. Wilson ended his day by striking out five in 4.1 innings, which were both career highs on the mound.

The song remained the same in the sixth with both teams going down in order. Freshman Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) relieved Wilson in the inning, and shut down the Bulls, striking out one. The seventh was the same for EMU but better for USF, as they blew the game open with three more runs on a three-run single with two outs. With two innings to play, USF led 8-4.

A seventh straight scoreless inning put EMU three out away from defeat, but the deficit did not grow any larger in the bottom of the eighth after a scoreless frame from sophomore Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton). The Eagles couldn't get anything going though, completing the 8-4 final.

Eastern wraps up the weekend with a third game against the Bulls to conclude the week in Florida. First pitch from the USF Baseball Stadium is set for noon, Sunday, Feb. 28.
