Eagles Stand in Third After Day Two of MAC Championships

Friday's Prelims Heat Sheet
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team slipped to third-place on day two of the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 25. Behind a pair of top-three finishes, the Eagles pushed their team total to 197.5 but a strong day by Buffalo allowed the Bulls to take a 0.5-point lead over the Green and White.
Senior Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) and junior Carly Jackson (LaPorte, Ind.-LaPorte) qualified for the 'A' final in the 500 Freestyle. Detro cut more than two seconds off her preliminary time and one second off her personal-best in the finals. Touching in with a time of 4:51.54, Detro held off Toledo's Lauren Comer to claim second-place. Jackson clocked in at 4:54.65 to score a fifth-place finish.
Moving into the 200 Individual Medley, junior Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) and senior Clarice Daniel (Belcamp, Md.) each turned in career-best times in the championship heat. Daniel placed eighth with a time of 2:04.89, the ninth fastest time by an Eagle in the event in program history. Van Allen ranked fourth in a tight race that came down to the final 50. Holding off foes from Akron and Bowling Green, the Indianapolis, Ind. clocked in with a scorching time of 2:01.49, just one tenth of a second off the program record.
Senior Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) was the lone Eagle in a talented 50 Free championship heat. MacLean's preliminary time was one of seven NCAA 'B' cut times in the field. She touched in with a program-record time of 22.78 in the prelims before tying for fifth in finals.
The fourth event of the evening took place on the springboard were the Green and White received points from a sixth-place finish by sophomore Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy) on the 1-meter. Deacon posted a score of 281.50 to add 13 points to EMU's total.
Day two came to a close with the 200 Free Relay where the Green and White's squad featured junior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville), Detro, junior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area), and MacLean. Coming into the race with the fourth-seeded time, the Eagles turned in a season-best finish of 1:31.60 to take home bronze. Battling for the top spot early on, the Eagles found themselves in a battle for second heading into the final 25 meters. The photo-finish came down to the wire where the Green and White were out-touched by 0.04 seconds by Buffalo,
The MAC Championships resume tomorrow, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m at Cooper Pool. The morning session will feature preliminary heats for the 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Free, 100 Breaststroke, and 100 Backstroke. The 3-meter diving prelims will follow before the championship heats take place beginning at 7 p.m.
