YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team downed in-state rival Western Michigan University, 73-62, Tuesday, Feb. 23, avenging a loss from earlier this season. The Eagles (15-14, 7-8 MAC) were able to limit Western's (11-17, 5-10 MAC) Thomas Wilder to just 10 points, while forcing him into nine turnovers. Wilder went for 35 points and 10 rebounds in the EMU loss at Western, Jan. 30.
Four Eagles finished with double-digit scoring performances, as junior Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) led the way with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Freshman James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) just missed a double-double, posting 14 points and eight rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end. Finally, redshirt junior Raven Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) and junior Ty Toney (Alpharetta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands College)) each kicked in 13, with Toney also nabbing five boards and four assists. Sophmore Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) had a solid overall game as well with six points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals.
As a team, Eastern knocked down 28-of-54 (51.9 percent) shots from the field, as well as six shots from beyond the arc. The Eagle defense forced the Broncos into 18 turnovers, 10 of which were EMU steals. The Green and White used this to their advantage, holding a 19-11 edge in points off turnovers. Additionally, EMU dominated in fast break points, 13-2. Finally, the Eagles also held an advantage down low to the tune of 36 points to 30.
The Broncos scored the first points of the game on a fast break layup before an Eagle steal led to a Bond layup on the other end. Both teams traded baskets, with WMU leading, 6-4, at the 16-minute mark. The Eagles' offense struggled generating points, as the Broncos held a 13-8 lead at the 12-minute mark. A bucket from Toney brought the game back within five points, 15-10, before a Mangum three made the score 15-13. Toney then sunk another one before Thompson broke the tie to give EMU their first lead of the game. Senior Brandon Nazione (Howell, Mich.-Howell) then drained a shot from behind the arc to put the Green and White ahead by four, 21-17.
Nazione kept it rolling with a huge dunk to maintain the four-point lead at 23-19 approaching the five-minute mark. With halftime fast approaching, the Green and White held a 24-21 lead with 3:36 to go. At this point, the team was shooting 10-of-19 from the floor while holding Western to a 9-of-24 mark. A pair at the line from Lee put the Eagles up by five, which was their largest lead of the first half. Heading into the final two minutes, the two teams were tied at 26 apiece. However, a free throw from Nazione put EMU back on top. Heading into the locker room, the Eagles held a slim 31-28 lead.
Both offenses came out firing in the second half, as the Eagles and Broncos were deadlocked before a Mangum three put Eastern backon top. However, Western quickly responded, regaining the lead at 35-34. From there, WMU kept rolling, jumping ahead by five, 39-36, before another Mangum bucket brought the score back within three. Back-to-back makes from redshirt freshman Jordan Nobles (Canton, Mich.-Canton) gave the lead back to EMU, 40-39. From there, Mangum drained two threes, after which Bond threw down a huge transition dunk to bring the score to 50-43. The Eagle defense continued causing issues for the Broncos, as the team nabbed a steal and drained the bucket on the other end to go ahead by nine.
From there, the offense continued clicking, opening up a double-digit lead, 57-44, with 9:45 left to play. The teams traded baskets, with the Green and White still holding a 10-point lead, 59-49, at the 7:35 mark. A dunk by Thompson extended the lead to 12, 61-49, as the team began to chew the clock. The defense continued to cause issues for the Broncos, while the offense got into a rhythm and increased the lead to 65-50 at the 4:40 mark. Holding a 70-55 lead at the two-minute mark, the team continued to drain the clock. The Eagles extended their lead to as many as 17 before clearing the benches, and finishing the Broncos with a 73-62 victory.
Eastern Michigan will look to make it three wins in a row Saturday, Feb. 27, when the Eagles travel to Muncie, Ind. to square off with Ball State University. EMU will look to avenge a last second double overtime loss from earlier this season when they hit the floor against the Cardinals at 2 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
