Rodes and Weppernig Named MAC’s Co-Golfers of the Week

The juniors each went 3-0 as the Eagles claimed the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play Challenge
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) and Philippe Weppernig (Lucerne, Switzerland-Kantonsschule Alpenquai Luzern-Owens C.C.) have been named the Mid-American Conference Men's co-Golfers of the Week for the period ending Feb. 10. It is the first weekly conference accolade to be won by each of the juniors.
At the 2016 Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play Tournament, Rodes and Weppernig each posted a perfect week, going 3-0 as the Eagles played the underdog as the No. 5 seed in the tournament to claim the team title.
In the five years of the event, Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew has posted an 11-3 record in match play. The Eagles, who finished tied for first last season and second at the 2012 and 2014 events, defeated No. 4 Xavier University on tiebreakers in the opening round. They then edged No. 1 seeded Miami University, 4-2, in the semifinal round yesterday.
In the opener against No. 4 Xavier, Weppernig downed Matt Wetterich, 5&4, before recording a 1-up victory over Miami's Brian Ohr. In the finale, he cruised to a 4&2 win over Notre Dame's Kevin Conners. Meanwhile, Rodes edged Xavier's David Long, 2&1, Miami's Greg Conrad, 1-up, and Notre Dame's Miguel Delgado, 4&3.
Eastern Michigan returns to action at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate, Feb. 22-23, in Mobile, Ala.
