Wrestling Places Four at the Cleveland State Open

Redshirt senior Devan Marry took second at 165 lbs.
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team competed in the Cleveland State Open today, Dec. 17. The Eagles placed four wrestlers in the top-six of their weight classes, led by redshirt senior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) who had a runner-up finish at 165 lbs.
Also taking podium honors were freshman Andrew McNally (Uniontown, Ohio-Lake) who wrestled unattached at 174 lbs. The true freshman took third, marking his third straight top-eight finish, and highest placement this season. Redshirt freshman Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) and redshirt sophomore Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) both placed at 133 lbs., taking fifth and sixth respectively.
Marry began his day with a boom, pinning his opponent in 2:08. In the quarterfinals, he had a big matchup with Cam Harrell of Virginia, but he controlled the match with a 9-4 decision. This set up a semifinal with Logan Kerin of Bucknell, in which Marry grinded out a 5-3 decision to get to the 165 lbs. final match. In the finals, Marry met returning All-American David McFadden of Virginia Tech. The Hokie pinned him to take the title, with Marry taking second.
McNally was equally as dominating in his first three bouts of the day, winning by major decision in back-to-back matches, 13-3 and 10-1. In the quarterfinals, he met Matt McFarland of Ohio, and turned him in 3:17 for the pin to get to the semis. In the semis, Jordan Paggano of Rutgers downed him by fall to drop to the third place match. There, he won by injury default to claim the third spot. McNally is now 13-4 on the season.
Perry, who placed in his first tournament of the season, got his day started with back-to-back decisions, 4-0 and 7-1, to advance to the quarters. There he was fell by a tight 4-2 decision by Mickey Phillipi of Virginia to drop to the consolation round. In the consolation round, Perry tore through his next three opponents, winning by pin (2:46), major decision (10-2) and another major decision (9-1) in the fifth place match over fellow Eagle Torres to take fifth.
On the other side of the 133 bracket, Torres made his Eagle debut at the weight class. He won his opening match by 6-2 decision to, but was defeated in his next match in overtime to drop to the consolation. There, he went on a tear, rattling off four straight wins. He began with an 8-0 major, followed by a 6-0 decision. In the consolation quarters, he won in overtime, 4-2, to get to the consolation semis.
In that match, he met the grappler who took him out in the championship bracket, and got his revenge with a 2-1 decision, setting up the fifth place showdown with Perry. The Ohio native ran out of gas though, falling to take sixth.
Elsewhere on the day, redshirt freshman Jared Langley (Newton, Kan.-Newton) almost placed in the top-six, winning two matches, both by decision 8-4 and 4-3. The only other Eagle to take a match was redshirt freshman Kris Hill (Columbus, Ohio-Bishop Hartley), who had a promising start winning his first two bouts by decision 8-6, and then in overtime, 10-8, before falling in his next two.
Eastern is done with dual action in the 2016 calendar year, but will wrestle once more before the New Year at The Midlands tournament in Evanston, Ill. The all day tournament will run, Dec. 29-30 and will pit the Eagles against some of the top teams in the country.
