Eagles Drop 82-74 Decision in Final Minutes to Vermont

Eastern was within striking distance late but ultimately fell short
BURLINGTON, Vt. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's men's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped Saturday, Dec. 17, when it traveled to Burlington, Vt. to take on the University of Vermont. The Eagles (6-4) dropped an 82-74 decision at Patrick Gymnasium to the Catamounts (8-4).
Eastern's offense continued its hot streak shooting 44.3 percent from the floor and 56.3 percent from beyond the arc. Senior Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) led the squad with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, connecting on five three pointers while junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) posted 15 points. Redshirt sophomore Jordan Nobles (Canton, Mich.-Canton) set a career-high in scoring with 14 points, while pouring in a pair of three-pointers. Sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) had a career day as well, grabbing 21 rebounds, 13 points, three blocks, and three assists.
The Catamounts came out firing in the first half knocking down four of its first five shots, including a trio of long balls from Ernie Duncan to jump out to a quick 11-4 lead with 16:29 on the clock. The Eagles were unable to make a run until under the 10 minute mark.
EMU was looking at a six-point deficit with 9:17 to go in the half, but after trading buckets, Eastern went on a 9-0 run to take a four-point, 34-30, with 7:17 left. The Eagles' run sparked a Vermont timeout. Out of the break, the Catamounts scored four straight before the two squads traded buckets once again. With 3:32 on the clock, Thompson was called for a technical foul and Duncan sparked another Vermont run, as the Catamounts scored eight of the next 10 points. Vermont extended its lead to eight, 48-40, with 1:14 left, but the Green and White scored the final five points of the half, including a triple from Mangum to head into the break, down 48-45.
The first half saw Thompson grab a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Mangum added 10 points of his own. EMU shot 47.1 percent from the floor, while hitting 54.5 percent of its three-point opportunities.
The Green and White fell down by as many at 14 quickly in the second half, 62-48, on the back of a 13-2 run over the first five minutes of play. EMU returned fire with an 11-0 run of its own to come within two before the Catamounts extended its lead back to four, 68-64, with 6:31 to go.
EMU tied up the game, 70-70, with a pair of Bond free throws at the 3:44 mark but the Eagles were never able to regain the lead at Vermont cruised to an 82-74 victory by hitting free throws down the stretch.
The Green and White remain on the road Monday, Dec. 19, when it travels to Syracuse, N.Y. to square of with Syracuse University. The game is slated for 7 p.m. and can be seen live on ESPNU.
