YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team hosted Lawrence Technological University in exhibition action Monday night, Nov. 6, just days ahead of its season opener. The Eagles cruised to a 74-54 victory in the exhibition contest as they held on to the lead for the full 40 minutes of the game.
Senior Sheyna Deans (Mt. Clemens, Mich.-Mt. Clemens (St. Clair County C.C.)) led a balanced offense for the Eagles. Deans scored a game-high 20 points, while adding 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block in a stat-stuffing performance. Freshman Esabelle Levine (Eden Prairie, Minn.-Eden Prairie), senior Phillis Webb (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Osseo), and junior Tori Easley (Toledo, Ohio-Rogers) added nine points apiece. Meanwhile, junior Micah Robinson (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Huron) dished out a game-high seven assists to go along with seven points and four rebounds.
Five different players connected from beyond the arc in the first half, leading the Eagles to a 40-22 lead at the break. Deans paced the Green and White with a game-high 13 first half points and six boards, while Levine added six points on 2-of-3 shooting from distance. As a team, EMU shot 50 percent from the floor, while the Eagles forced 10 Blue Devil miscues and held Lawrence Tech to just a 24.1 field goal percentage.
In the second half, the Blue Devils stormed back, cutting the Eagles' advantage to 12 amid a three and half minute scoring drought for EMU. Dailey put the Green and White back on track with back-to-back baskets, pushing Eastern Michigan's lead to 53-36 just before the end of the third quarter, but the Eagles struggled to find consistency on offense.
With Eastern's outside shooting cooling off, Lawrence Tech used a 13-2 run to pull within eight, 60-52, with three and half minutes remaining. The Eagles ended the run with seven consecutive points by Deans, extending their lead to 15, 67-52, while the EMU defense held the Blue Devils scoreless for roughly two minutes. From there, buckets by Easley and Levine sealed a 74-54 win for the Eagles.
Eastern Michigan officially opens the season this weekend, Nov. 12-13, at the Donna Murphy Classic hosted by Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky. EMU kicks off the weekend, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m. against Georgia State University.
