Eagles Open Dual Season with 42-0 Win Over Olivet

EMU had bonus points in 6-of -10 match ups
OLIVET, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team opened the 2016-17 dual season with a bang as they blanked the Olivet College Comets, 42-0, Friday night, Nov. 11 at the Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
The Eagles completed the shutout behind six bouts that had bonus points, including two falls, two technical falls, and two major decisions. It was the first EMU shutout since the Eagles held the Michigan State Spartans scoreless last season, Dec. 2.
The dual began at 149 lbs. where returning NCAA qualifier redshirt senior Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) got things started with a 14-2 major decision. A pair of near falls helped get the job done to get EMU out to the 4-0 start.
At 157 lbs., redshirt freshman J.J. Wolfe (Dakota, Ill.-Dakota) made his EMU dual debut with a little adversity, falling down 3-2 after the first period. However the Dakota, Ill. native came around in the next two periods to secure an 8-5 decision and extend the lead to 7-0, Eastern.
Another Eagle made his dual debut at 165 lbs. when redshirt freshman David Kasper (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) took the mat. He started off strong leading 4-0 into the third when he kicked it into overdrive, delivering a pair of near falls on his way to a 13-0 major decision. After the first three bouts, EMU led 11-0.
Redshirt senior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) continued the high scoring at 174 lbs., racing out to a 12-0 first period lead. Two points in the second and two in the third gave the veteran the 16-0 technical fall, and extended the lead to 16-0.
The 184 lbs. bout was a bit tougher for EMU and redshirt sophomore Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.- Libertyville) who rode a 1-0 escape into the third, and finished off his opponent with riding time to take a 2-0 decision.
Redshirt sophomore Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) made his debut at 197 lbs. in the next bout, and came away with a solid 7-2 decision to push the Eagle lead to 22-0 going into heavyweight.
Returning NCAA qualifier redshirt junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) was challenged against returning Division-III national qualifier Jesse Judge of Olivet at heavyweight. With the score just 2-1 headed into the third, Hutchison picked up a crucial takedown, and with riding time notched the 5-3 decision.
Going back to the top, redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) was the third Eagle to make his dual debut at 125 lbs. He got things started with a 6-0 first period. He turned the momentum into a second period fall in 3:38 to break things open at 31-0 Eastern.
The Eagles posted back-to-back falls at 133 when redshirt freshman Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) notched his in just 1:43 in his dual debut to make the score 37-0 heading into the final match.
Closing out the bout at 141 lbs., redshirt junior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) cruised to a 10-3 first period lead, which extended to 14-5 after two and resulted in a 23-8 technical fall to complete the sweep, 42-0.
The Eagles now have the week off before heading to Pennsylvania for a dual with Clarion University. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m., Friday Nov. 18.
