EMU Athletics Teams Up with Swoop's Food Pantry

Fans who donate at the Oct. 29 football game will receive a discount on their ticket
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's Department of Athletics is teaming up with the university organization called Swoop's Food Pantry which is a campus-based organization that is run by a leadership board consisting of EMU faculty, staff, students and alumni volunteers.
At the Saturday, Oct. 29, EMU football game, volunteers from Swoop's Food Pantry will be collecting non-perishable food items for the pantry itself. Fans who donate an item will receive a $5 single-game ticket for the nationally televised contest versus Miami University at 3:30 p.m.
Fans who bring canned food to donate to Swoops Food Pantry will receive a voucher for the football game at Rynearson Stadium. This voucher can be redeemed at the EMU Ticket Office that day to receive a game ticket for only $5. Additional drop off locations will be outside of gates one and two of the stadium.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to support this campus initiative and help provide food for those in need," remarked Eastern Michigan Vice President and Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. " We encourage everyone coming to the game to bring a canned good which will be donated and greatly appreciated."
Swoop's Student Food Pantry is a campus-based organization that is run by a leadership board consisting of EMU faculty, staff, students and alumni volunteers. Its mission is to provide EMU students in need with food assistance and additional resources to positively affect well-being and college success. Its goals are to:
• Create a sustainable resource for students to temporarily help meet food needs of students on campus.
• To meet emergency, non-food needs of students.
• Distribute food discreetly in easily accessible and safe environments on-campus.
• To provide students with resources to assist them in accessing services in the area.
• To involve community partners to assure the sustainability of the pantry
In addition, the EMU football team will also be wearing pink as a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a worldwide annual campaign involving thousands of organizations, to highlight the importance of breast cancer awareness, education and research.
The contest against the RedHawks is also Band/Hall of Fame Day at Rynearson Stadium, with 13 high school bands in attendance, performing as one during a special halftime concert. The schools scheduled to participate include: Blissfield, Garden City, Monroe, Monroe Jefferson, Morenci, Riverview Community, Swartz Creek, Warren Lincoln, Whiteford, Whitmore Lake, Woodhaven, Utica and Ypsilanti Community.
