Athletics department to deliver shipment of water Jan. 29 in football team’s equipment truck
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Flint, Michigan is in the middle of a water crisis, and Eastern Michigan University's Department of Athletics is ready to step in and help.
Through the efforts of EMU Student Senator Evan Sweet, who coordinated this initiative with a number of campus and community agencies the EMU Department of Athletics will be delivering hundreds of cases of water to Flint on Friday, Jan. 29. EMU Athletics and Corrigan Moving Systems will donate the use of the 48-foot Football Equipment Truck to make the delivery to the Brennan Senior Center in Flint.
"I came up with a plan for a bottled water drive after speaking with many students and staff at EMU," remarked Sweet, a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. "I saw that the residents of the City of Flint were in need of a necessity, which many of us take for granted, access to clean water, I knew they needed help. At that time, I was set on getting those in the community involved to help our friends and neighbors in Flint and EMU Athletics offered to help."
The Brennan Senior Center was identified by the Taking Action on Flint Water – www.mi.gov/FlintWater water resource site initiative.
"Thank you EMU for your generosity and caring for our seniors," Deborah Holmes, the Director of the Brennan Senior Center said. "Many of them are not able to stand in line or go to water resource locations. Delivering the water directly to us will really help our seniors. Thank you!"
Members of the EMU football team will be on site in Flint to help unload the cases of water.
"We know how important it is for us to give back to our communities," mentioned junior football student-athlete and member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Lavonte Robinson said. "We know that delivering this water is going to make a real impact and that is important to us as student-athletes and EMU ambassadors."
Organizers hope to receive more than 500 cases of bottled water, along with gallon and five-gallon containers of water. Interested persons wanting to make a donation of water can do so through Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Convocation Center Loading Dock.
The EMU-Ypsilanti community will still be collecting water through Friday, Feb. 12, with various donation sites located around town.
