Senior Corynne Smith and freshman Jordan Smith both earned MAC Player of the Week awards
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- A pair of Eastern Michigan University volleyball players were honored by the Mid-American Conference Monday, Sept. 8. Senior libero Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) was named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week, while Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) recorded MAC West Offensive Player of the Week honors for the period ending Sept. 7. It was the second-straight weekly award for Corynne Smith and the eighth of her career, while Jordan Smith notched her first MAC weekly award of her career.
Corynne Smith continued her hot start to the 2015 campaign. The Norwalk, Ohio native recorded a total of 53 digs over the course of the weekend as the Eagles swept the 2015 IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational. Coming off EMU's tournament championship Smith averaged 5.30 digs per frame, including going a perfect 26-for-26 in reception attempts. Smith's 5.30 digs per set is over .40 more per frame than the leader of the Mid-American Conference posted during the 2014 campaign. In addition, Smith helped the offense by posting 15 assists over the Eagles' 10 sets this weekend, while also adding three aces. Smith now trails the all-time digs record at Eastern Michigan by just 585.
Jordan Smith proved that she deserves to be playing at the NCAA Division I level at the 2015 IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational last weekend, Sept. 4-5. On her way to being named to the all-tournament team as Eastern won the invite, the Solon, Iowa native recorded 30 kills in the three matches. Averaging three kills per set, the 5-foot-10 outside hitter posted a .418 attack percentage, which is a percentage near the top of the Mid-American Conference. Overall the freshman averaged three kills and 3.40 points per frame over the weekend.
The Eagles get back to work this weekend, Sept. 11-12, when they head to Terre Haute, Ind. for the 2015 Sycamore Classic, hosted by Indiana State University. EMU looks forward to a pair of doubleheaders this weekend beginning with a match against IPFW Friday afternoon, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m.
