Eastern saw its No. 1 doubles team win its opening round match
EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's tennis team continued its 2015 fall campaign Friday, Sept. 25, after traveling to the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University. The Eagles began a pair of singles draws, along with starting the doubles draw on Friday.
The tournament started with doubles action as the No. 1 squad of Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova dropped Drake's Kenya Williams and Maddie Johnson, 6-1, in the opening round, before falling to DePaul's Marina Cozac and Milica Tesic, 6-2, dropping them into the consolation round. The duos of Ani Gogvadze and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna, along with Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva each lost to doubles squads from Michigan State in the opening round of the tournament.
On to singles action, Supejova earned a bye in the Purple Draw, while Veleva was granted the same honor in the White Draw. Sharma was the only Eagle to win in the opening round, defeating Emmy Virkus from Michigan State, 6-1, 6-3. Both Sharma and Veleva dropped their round of 16 matches, while Supejova fell in her match as well. In the singles consolation round, Barcelo was the only Eagle to come away with a victory, defeating Pittsburgh's Clara Lucas, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Eagles continue the Wildcat Invitational Saturday, Sept. 26, at 9 a.m.
