Three Eagles Named WGCA All-American Scholars

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's golf team saw three of its members honored Monday, July 6, when Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School), Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) and Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) were each named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association Collegiate Golf All-American Scholars list. EMU had three members of the 758-golfer list that ranged across Divisions I, II and II.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative grade point average is 3.50.
All three also earned all-academic honors from the Mid-American Conference last month.
In 26 rounds this season, Murphy averaged 76.12 strokes per round for the seventh-lowest tally in program history. She had a season low of 68 in the final round of the Nittany Lion Invitational as she rallied from nine strokes back in the final round to leapfrog the rest of the field to capture medalist honors with a career-best 218 (77-73-68). Murphy's blistering score of 68 was tied for the second lowest single-round tally in program history, as she joined Catherine Fortin (2004-08) as the only other Eagle to record a sub-69. The Plymouth, Mich. native finished in third-place at MAC Championship with a 228 (79-78-71) for the showing was the best by an Eagle since Sarah Johnson won the 2011 MAC title with a three-day total of 216 (72-73-71). She also tied for seventh at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate with a 229 (79-75-75) and finished 15th at the Red Rocks Invitational with a 151 (72-79). Currently, Murphy holds the best career scoring average in school-history at 76.63 in 60 all-time rounds played.
Lee Ping's season scoring average was tied for 17th-best in program history at 77.17. She had a season low of 72 in the second round of the Rio Verde Invitational and finished as the runner-up with a two-day tally of 146 (73-73) at the Cardinal Classic. The Brampton, Ontario native placed 17th at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate with a 232 (80-76-76) before following it up with an 18th-place tie at the River Landing Classic at 227 (76-75-76). Collected her fourth and fifth top-20 finish of the year with a 228 (78-73-77) at the Nittany Lion Invitational and a 236 (79-77-80) at the MAC Championships.
Schoof played in nine events in 2014-14, totaling an average of 77.40 strokes per round. She had a pair of top-five finishes, including recording her first career top 10 showing as she finished in a four-way tie for fourth place with a 149 (72-77) at the Cardinal Classic. She also finished in a tie for fourth, shooting a 228 (74-78-76) at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate.
Eastern Michigan had one of the best seasons in program history, as the Eagles posted the second-lowest 18-hole average in program history at 306.35. The tally was just 0.61 behind the 2011-12 squad's record-setting mark of 305.74. Overall, EMU posted a pair of tournament championships with wins at the Cardinal Classic, Sept. 22-23, and the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate, March 30-31.
