The senior second baseman added another honor to his successful EMU baseball career
AUSTIN, Texas (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University baseball's John Rubino continued to add to his postseason accolades as the senior was selected to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Baseball Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), June 4. Rubino garners the honor for the first time in his career after being selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Baseball First Team in District Five his junior and senior year.
The Scottsdale, Ariz. native is the first EMU baseball player to earn Academic All-America distinction since Kyle Rhoad earned the honor in 2009. Rubino is joined by Kent State pitcher Jared Skolnicki and Ball State outfielder Alex Call on the third team as the three representatives from the Mid-American Conference to garner Academic All-America honors.
The 2015 second team All-MAC performer had a remarkable final season for the Eagles, leading the team in batting average (.311), runs scored (34), hits (71), triples (3), and stolen bases (40). The 40 stolen bases set a new single season record in the EMU baseball record book and is the second most among all NCAA Division I players this season. Rubino etched his name even more into EMU laurels, as the second baseman ranks third in career stolen bases (76), fourth in at-bats (763), seventh in hits (226), 16th in runs (133), tied for 18th in triples (7), and tied for 22nd in walks (71).
Along with his athletic achievements, Rubino also excelled in the classroom and off the field for the Eagles. Rubino graduated as an economics major with a grade point average of 3.90. He was presented the MAC Medal of Excellence Award last week, May 27. The Medal of Excellence is an award presented to one male and one female student-athlete of each of the conference's member institutions graduating class who have exhibited athletics excellence, leadership, and service.
