COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team completed its first day of the Jesse Owens Track Classic, May 1, with three events held on Friday.
In the afternoon, Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio-Woodmore) was the only competitor on the track for the Green and White. The sophomore competed in the discus throw, placing 12th with a mark of 41.56 meters/136 feet 4-inches and was part of a select group that threw beyond the stringent minimum qualification mark set by the meet.
Opening up action on the track, the trio of Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich.-Seaholm), Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich.-Saline), and Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind.-Penn) competed alongside each other in the 5000m run. Bentzley pulled ahead of her teammates to pace the Eagles in 18:01.06 for 10th place, while Frauhammer took 12th in 18:16.79 and Pottschmidt crossed the line in 18:52.95, good for 19th.
The final event of the day was the 1500m run, in which Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) claimed third behind a pair of Big Ten competitors in a season-best 4:22.29. Placing 10th was Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) in a personal-best 4:25.54, while Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) shaved seven seconds off her time from earlier this season to take 13th in 4:27.89. McDermitt's mark goes down as the ninth-fastest time in EMU history, and the freshman was followed by Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) in 4:30.28 for 18th as the entire quartet notched Mid-American Conference qualifying marks for the event.
The Eagles will resume competition tomorrow, May 2, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The field events will begin with the long jump at 11 a.m., while action on the track will kick off at noon with the 4x100m relay.
