CHARLOTTESVILE, Va. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team had an outstanding day of performances to close out the Virginia Challenge, April 18, with multiple Eagles making their way into the EMU record books.
Highlighting the day was a record-breaking performance in the 5000m run by freshman Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison). The race was dominated by competitors from the Great Lakes State, as Michigan State claimed three of the top-five spots, while EMU and Michigan each had an athlete in the first five finishers. All-American Rachele Schulist of MSU led the way, with McDermitt taking fourth in 16:07.25 to break Eastern's 5000m record by nearly 15 seconds and earn the title of EMU record holder in both the indoor and outdoor 5000m as a rookie. Also competing was Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42), who was less than three seconds off her former school record mark and finished 11th in 16:24.94.
The distance group put up even more impressive times on Saturday, as all four competitors in the 1500m run set personal records. Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) led the way in 4:25.71 for 32nd, recording the sixth-fastest run in EMU history while Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) just missed out on the top-10 performances after taking 48th in 4:29.33 for the 11th-best time by an Eagle. Freshmen Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich.-Seaholm) and Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) also improved on their previous marks in the event, finishing in 4:41.42 and 4:42.57, respectively. Rounding out the distance runners for the day was Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich.-Saline), who took seventh in the 10,000m in 38:43.12.
The Eagles also saw tremendous success on the field with four members of the Green and White earning top-three finishes. Picking up the only win for the team was Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford), who won the high jump with a clearance of 1.73 meters/5 feet 8-inches. Following a superb performance in the triple jump yesterday, Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) finished runner-up in the long jump invitational less than two inches behind Ohio State's Abieyuwa Ehimwenman, leaping 5.92 meters/19 feet 5.25-inches for a personal-best mark. Also recording an EMU best and moving up to second in the hammer throw on Eastern's all-time performance list was Helga Volgyi (Szombathley, Hungary-Savaria Technical College), who placed third with a launch of 57.89 meters/189 feet 11-inches.
The final Eagle to finish in the top-three for the day was Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier), who completed the heptathlon with 5,480 points to take third in a highly competitive field. Chauchard first took fourth in both the long jump and javelin sections, leaping 5.61 meters/18 feet 5-inches and throwing 35.70 meters/117 feet 1-inch. She closed out her day with an even 2:16.00 in the 800m run, crossing the line three-quarters of a second off her best time to finish third in the event.
Back on the track, Eastern recorded one more top-10 finish courtesy of the lineup of Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams), Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike), Wolanin, and Chante Roberts (Lansing, Mich.-Waverly) in the 4x400m relay. The quartet finished 10th overall in 3:43.17. McKinney also led the sprint group in the 200m dash, placing 15th in 24.26 seconds and was followed by Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P. Meyer Lyceum) in 24.73 seconds, Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area), in 25.21 seconds, and Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J.-Toms River North) in 26.94 seconds.
Byrd also competed in the 100m hurdles, setting a personal best of 14.45 seconds to finish 22nd. Rounding out the day was Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif.-Carson), who clocked a 1:02.14 in the 400m hurdles to place 18th overall.
After two weekends away from home, the Eagles will remain in-state for their next weekend of competition. Eastern will head to Hillsdale, Mich. to compete in the Hillsdale Gina Relays, April 24-25.
