CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team kept up its stellar performance in the 2015 outdoor season, wrapping up the first day of the Virginia Challenge, April 17.
Friday was the first day of the heptathlon for one Eagle, as returning First Team All-American Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-Montpellier) knocked out the first four events on her two-day slate. Chauchard currently sits in fifth with 3,284 points, trailing the leader, Minnesota's Jess Herauf , by 156 points. Chauchard's highest finish of the day came in the shot put, where she notched a personal record of 13.05 meters/42 feet 9.75-inches to take second overall and move her up to fourth on EMU's all-time performance list. She had two more top-five finishes on the first day of action, taking fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.66 meters/5 feet 5.25-inches and finished fifth in the 100m hurdles in 14.42 seconds. To end the day, Chauchard clocked in at 25.66 seconds in the 200m dash to take 11th in the section.
The field events highlighted the day's action, with three Eagles moving up in program laurels after finishing in the top-four of their respective events. Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) set a personal record in the pole vault, finishing second in the invitational second with a mark of 4.00 meters/13 feet 1.50-inches to tie for the sixth-best vault in EMU history. Also etching her name near the top of the pole vault performance list was Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian), who took third in the collegiate pole vault after clearing 3.82 meters/12 feet 6.25-inches, good for eighth all-time.
The third Eagle to notch a career best on the field was Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1), placing fourth in a tightly-contested invitational section of the triple jump. Dreimane bounded 12.65 meters/41 feet 6-inches to record the third-best performance in EMU laurels, and was close behind the top-three, trailing 2014 All-Americans Tori Franklin of Michigan State and West Virginia alum Stormy Nesbit by just two inches.
Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio-Woodmore) competed in two events on the field, taking seventh in the discus throw with a launch of 42.45 meters/139 feet 3-inches and also finished 11th in the weight throw with a mark of 45.28 meters/148 feet 7-inches.
On the track, the Green and White had two more top-10 finishes. Chante Roberts (Lansing, Mich.-Waverly) came up with a big personal record in the 400m dash, taking eighth in 55.47 seconds, as she is just the second competitor from the Mid-American Conference to run a sub-56-second mark in the event. Also placing in the 400m was Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike), who took 24th in 57.03 seconds.
Yeadon contributed to the other top-10 finish on the track for the Eagles, teaming up with Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P. Meyer Lyceum), Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams), and Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) to take 10th in the 4x100m relay in 46.22 seconds. The trio of Clark, McKinney, and Jones all competed in the 100m dash, with McKinney leading the way in 11.95 seconds to finish 15th while Clark took 24th in 12.08 and Jones recorded a personal best in 12.33 seconds for 32nd.
Two more Eagles had personal records on the track to close out the day in a deep field for the 800m. Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) paced Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), as Gallein crossed the line in an even 2:12.00 for 35th while Cizmas took 56th in 2:14.38.
