YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team opened up the 2015 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships with a pair of top-three relay finishes. At the end of the two events, the Eagles are tied for first with Akron and Buffalo, all with 66 points, followed by Bowling Green and Ohio (62), Toledo (54), Miami (52), and Ball State (44).
The lineup of Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa-Moon Area), Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering), Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet), and Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) teamed up for a bronze finish in the 200 medley relay, touching in at 1:40.04. Akron took the overall title with a MAC record of 1:38.59, while Ohio took home second in 1:39.71.
In the 800 free relay, Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) started out the first leg of the relay, getting the Eagles to third before Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) hit the water and battled back and forth with Buffalo for the lead spot. The Eagles seemed to have solidified the win with Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) and Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central), but a surge by Buffalo's anchor Jess Powers powered the Bulls to victory in 7:14.82 while Eastern finished runner-up.
Tomorrow, Feb. 26, will begin with the preliminary heats in the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free as well as the 1-meter platform diving prelims and consolation finals. Prelims will begin at 11 a.m., while the consolation and championship heats will start at 7 p.m.
