Freshman garners weekly accolade after breaking the EMU 5000m record
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference announced Tuesday, Feb. 10 that freshman harrier Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) on the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team has been named the Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. The award marks the first weekly award for McDermitt, and it is the third honor for the team after Dace Dreimane was named Field Athlete of the Week, Jan. 27, and Victoria Voronko earned Track Athlete of the Week honors, Feb. 3.
McDermitt was the highlight performance for the Green and White at the Notre Dame Invitational, Feb. 6-7, with her EMU record-breaking performance. The Davison, Mich. native placed third in a tough field of 5000m competitors, crossing the line in 16:27.69. The mark was fast enough to edge teammate Voronko out of the top spot in the EMU record books, squeaking past her previous record time of 16:28.60 that was set at the EMU Holiday Meet, Dec. 5, 2014.
McDermitt and Voronko currently hold the top two marks in program history, which is a strange occurence for a duo of teammates to hold the premier pair of records in the books. However, the last time the feat was accomplished was just three years ago, when Angela Scarber and Lydia Gomez-Diaz threw the two farthest weight throw distances in 2012 at 17.84 meters/58 feet 6.75-inches and 16.66 meters/54 feet 8.25-inches, respectively. Beyond that, the last time that two top marks for an event were set in the same year was in 1988, when Donna Donakowski and Andrea Bowman clocked in at 4:41.44 and 4:44.97 for the fastest mile times at that point in EMU laurels.
Eastern will continue its preparation for the 2015 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, sending the majority of the team to Geneva, Ohio for the SPIRE Invitational, while a small group will stay in-state for the Grand Valley State University "Big Meet" in Allendale, Mich. The GVSU "Big Meet" will be held Friday, Feb. 13, while the SPIRE Invitational will run Friday through Saturday, Feb. 13-14.
