Women's Swimming and Diving Wins EMU Invitational

EMU posts 1230 points for first place while Wayne State second with 939

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team built upon a day one lead to win the EMU Invitational with a total of 1,230 points Saturday, Dec. 5. An all-around effort and two pool records fueled the Eagles to a successful day and the invite victory for the second consecutive year.
Eastern's sophomore diving crew opened day two with an impressive showing, claiming two of the top three spots. Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge) led the way with a score of 287.60 while Alli Shereda's (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) score of 282.90 ranked third.
Turning to the swimming events, the Eagles achieved the coveted one-two punch in the 200 Medley Relay. Freshmen Erika Guenther, Delaney Duncan, and Stephanie Johnston combined with junior Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) shaved three and a half seconds off their preliminary time on their way to posting not only a season-best time but also pool and meet record. The Eagles' time of 1:42.39 bested the meet record set, Dec. 4, 2010, and edged out the pool record (1:42.78) set in 2005 by nearly four tenths of a second. Not far behind the first place foursome, juniors Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa-Moon Area) and Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) teammed up with freshman Dora Vrcic and senior Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day). Placing second in the event, the Eagles' relay squad touched in eight hundreths of a second faster than the previous meet record with a time of 1:43.42.
Following a second place showing by junior Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) in the 400 Individual Medley, the Green and White returned to the top of the podium courtesy of Jackson. The La Porte, Ind. product finished the 100 Buttefly in 56.08 while Vrcic placed third.
Senior Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) kept the Eagles on track, riding an early lead in the 200 Freestyle to her third victory of the season with a time of 1:52.19. Junior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) passed up Ashland's Kaylyn Murphy on the second split and never looked back on the her way to a runner-up finish.
In her first return to the pool since setting the pool and meet records in the 200 Medley Relay, Duncan posted her second win of the season. Touching in in 1:03.78, Duncan edged out Wayne State's Hannah Loesch while Worthley added 16 points to the Eagles' total with a third place finish.
A win by Mitcheltree in the 100 Backstroke gave the Eagles their fourth win in as many events. Finishing with a time of 55.54, Mitcheltree led the field by more than two seconds. With Mitchteltree in the lead, Guenther fought for a third place finish.
The Green and White closed out session one by competing in the 800 Free Relay for the first time this season. The relay squad made up of Van Allen, freshman Emilie Desnoyers, Detro, and Wagner led from the get-go, ultimately winning the event with a meet-best time of 7:28.99. Eastern also claimed second place in the event as freshmen Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) and Rebecca Winnert (Buffalo, N.Y.-Williamsville), Jackson, and sophomore Rosalie Yockey (DeWitt, Mich.-DeWitt) finished second.
Midway through day two, the Eagles had totaled 775 points. Wayne State lingered closely however, standing in second with 654 points.
Session two kicked off with the 200 Free Relay, an event the Eagles have had success in all season. MacLean, Johnston, Mitcheltree, and Wagner combined for a first place finish while Desnoyers, Detro, Duncan, and Vrcic finished just behind them in second place.
Van Allen returned to the pool in session two for the 500 Free. Posting the only sub-five-minute time, the Indianapolis, Ind. native bested the field. Jackson rounded out the top three, finishing third just behin Wayne State's Morgan Kollen.
In the 200 IM the Eagles claimed the top two spots. Guenter built off an early lead to turn in a first place finish while Daniel placed second.
Eastern Michigan turned in its lone sweep of the day in the 50 Free as Wagner, Johnston, and MacLean finished first through third, respectively.

The EMU Invite closed the book on the 2015 portion of the Eagles slate as the Green and White do not return to competition until Jan. 22, 2016, when the Eagles battle Wayne State in dual action.
