EMU men's basketball student-athletes and coaches are running a food and holiday gift drive
DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will be hosting the Rob Murphy Foundation's second annual "Gift of Sharing" event this week. Players, staff, and volunteers will be visiting the Boys & Girls Cub Tuesday, December 15th and Bagley Elementary Friday, December 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where the event will take place.
The Rob Murphy Foundation partnered with Bagley Elementary to host the second annual food drive, "The Gift of Sharing". Volunteers will work with a group of students to make holiday cards and pack food boxes for 25 neighborhood senior citizens that have been identified as being in need of additional assistance with access to food. In addition, packages will also be created for 45 families from Bagley Elementary. When the families arrive to pick up the boxes, volunteers will greet them and assist in carrying them to their vehicles.
"It's exciting to be able to assist several families during the holiday season" Eastern Michigan Head Men's Basketball Coach Rob Murphy stated. "I'm extremely thankful to my staff and donors that help make this vision a reality. It's refreshing for me to help bring joy to others". The Rob Murphy Foundation is providing toys for over 500 students during "Gift of Sharing" week.
The Rob Murphy Foundation was created in 2014 by Detroit, Mich. native and current EMU men's basketball head coach Rob Murphy with a clear vision: "Every Child Needs Opportunity" - The mission of the foundation is to provide support and opportunities for youth in under-served areas, so that through education, health awareness, and community involvement, today and tomorrow's youth may experience the positive impact of their interaction with this foundation.
Rob Murphy is currently in his fifth year as the head coach of the Eastern Michigan men's basketball team and has reached a number of milestones including a key road victory over the University of Michigan last season. During his inaugural season of 2011-12, Murphy led EMU to its first-ever MAC West Division Championship, and was named MAC Coach of the Year as well as Co-Coach of the Year in the NCAA District 14 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
