YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell at home against the University of Akron, Saturday, Oct. 24, in four sets, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21. Individually, the Eagles were led by junior Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) with 11 kills while freshman Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) chipped in 10 kills herself. Additionally, redshirt freshman Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) and senior Alyssa Davis (Kalamazoo, Mich. - Plainwell) combined for 45 assists on the night, while senior Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led the defense with 23 digs.
The first set saw offensive struggles limit the Eagles, as the Green and White only hit at a .150 clip while the Zips managed a .324 clip. Murray tallied a set-high 5 kills while Rajewski notched nine assists in the frame. Despite trailing the entire frame, the Eagles managed to pull within three before Akron took the set, 25-20.
Despite the offense not faring much better in the second set, the Eagle defense found its groove and held the Zips to a .048 clip. Multiple Eagles contributed to the EMU attack, as Haut led the way with 3 kills while Smith anchored the defense with 7 digs. The Green and White led the entire set, before heating up and closing the set by a total of 25-20.
The Eagles jumped to an early lead in the third set behind kills from redshirt senior Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City) and Haut. The two teams kept it close throughout the majority of the set, as the score remained tied at 17 a piece before the Zips rattled off three straight points. Ultimately, the Green and White could not get their offense going, and fell in the third set by a 25-19 margin.
Both offenses fared much better in the final set, with the Eagles hitting at .312 while the Zips hit at a .353 clip. The Green and White raced out to a 8-4 lead in the early goings of the fourth set before Akron closed the margin and tied the score at 11. The Zips then took over and jumped ahead to a 20-16 lead behind errors from EMU. The Eagles fought back to within one, before Akron rattled off three straight points to win the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.
The Green and White remain at home next week, with matches against Northern Illinois, Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. and Western Michigan, Saturday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m. for its Senior Night.
