ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University tennis sophomore Andrea Martinovska has began her play at the 2015 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional strong, winning a pair of matches in the qualifying draw at the University of Michigan Thursday, Oct. 22. Of the four Eagles to participate in the qualifying round, Martinovska is the only one remaining.
Martinovska began the day with a two-set win over Chicagio State's Hanemas Pangestu, 6-1, 6-1, in the opening round of the qualifying draw. Also competing in the qualifying draw were Ani Gogvadze, Anna Veleva and Renu Sharma. Gogvadze came away from her first round match with a victory over Toledo's Mackenzi Bowman, 7-5, 6-3, while both Sharma and Veleva fell, sending them into the qualifying consolation matches.
In round two of the qualifying draw, Martinovska continued her solid play, defeating Noelly Nslmba from Youngstown State, 6-4, 7-6, to remain alive in hopes of making her way into the main draw. Gogvadze did not have the same outcome in her second round match as Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Laurle Clark took down the Tbilisi, Georgia native in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, knocking Gogvadze out of the qualifying draw.
In their consolation matches, Sharma and Veleva each came away victorious. Both Eagles defeated fellow Mid-American Conference opponents as Sharman knocked off Western Michigan's Ella Perinovic, 6-1, 6-2, and Veleva was on the right side of a 6-1, 6-3 decision against Toledo's Colleen O'Brien.
