Eagles Clip Falcons in Five Set Cross-Divisional Match

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's volleyball team completed a quick two-match road trip Saturday, Oct. 17, when it defeated Bowling Green State University in five sets at the Stroh Center. The Eagles (12-9, 4-4 MAC) and Falcons (5-16, 1-7 MAC) split the first four sets, 18-25, 25-18, 14-25, 25-22, before Eastern Michigan grabbed a 15-8 win in the fifth set.
The Green and White hit at a .145 percentage, just a touch higher than Bowling Green at .127. Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) led the Eagles' offense posting 16 kills on 35 attempts with eight errors. Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) added 11 kills and a .308 attack percentage, while Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) recorded 33 assists, 12 digs and a pair of aces in the victory. Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) posted a team-best 20 digs to lead the EMU defense.
Set one saw the Eagles struggle offensively, hitting at just an .025 percentage in a 25-18 setback. Falling behind by a single set, the Falcons hit .200 with 14 kills, while EMU managed just nine. Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic Central), Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City) and Jordan Smith each recorded a pair of kills in the set, while BGSU's Nicole Slimko and Jelena Sunjic each posted five kills in the opening frame.
The Eagles' offense came out swinging as Jordan Smith posted six kills as EMU tied the match at a set apiece with a 25-18 set win. Smith went 6-of-7 with just one error in the second frame, while Eastern Michigan hit at a .355 attack percentage, while holding the Falcons to an .065 hitting percentage. Rajewski grabbed 10 of her 33 assists in the second set.
After the break, Bowling Green recorded a dominant 25-14 third set win to jump back up to another one-set lead. Eastern hit at an -.069 attack percentage as the Eagles struggled offensively. The Falcons used five blocks to hold down the Eagle offense.
Set four saw the Green and White's defense step up with four solo blocks, including a pair from Haut alone. Dori Harrison (Euclid, Ohio-Beaumont School (South Florida)) and Krasowski each posted four kills in the Eagles 25-22 set victory to even up the match. EMU's defense held the Falcons to an .093 attack percentage in the set, keeping BGSU to just 12 kills in the set.
Eastern's offense put together an extraordinary offensive performance in the final set of the match, dropping the Falcons 15-8. Jordan Smith notched three kills while Harrison and Krasowski each recorded a pair as the Eagles hit at a .500 percentage. Eastern held Bowling Green to a .130 percentage to take the Green and White's fourth Mid-American Conference victory of the season.
The Green and White returns to the court Friday, Oct. 23, when the Eagles welcome the University at Buffalo to the Convocation Center. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. Friday night.
