YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team begins the home portion of the 2015 campaign Saturday, Jan. 24, with a 1 p.m. match versus the University of Detroit.
Eastern Michigan is no stranger to facing their in-state rival, Detroit. The Green and White has seen the Titans on 12 occasions, winning each of them. Last season was an easy victory for Head Women's Tennis Coach Ryan Ray's squad. EMU topped the Titans, 5-2.
EMU swept the doubles matches with wins from the duos of Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno), Diana Davitaia and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) and Mariya Toncheva. The top-three singles matches came out in favor of the Eagles. Supejova topped Viktoria Laskutova in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 1-0) while Davitaia knocked off Nino Sujashvili in straight sets (6-0, 6-4). Mebuke took down Irina Slizovskaya, 6-3, 6-1. Friedrichs won the other singles win from the Eagles. She defeated Valery Kulikovskaya (6-7, 6-1, 1-0).
