Kent State Hands Eastern Its Third Loss of the MAC Season

Eastern dropped to 0-3 in the Mid-American Conference campaign
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – After dropping two in a row to start the Mid-American Conference season, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team was handed its third-straight MAC loss when Kent State University came back from a 10-point half time deficit to defeat the Eagles, 65-59, at the Memorial Athletic Convocation Center. The Eagles (11-5, 0-3 MAC) are winless through their first three MAC games for the first time since the 2005-06 season when the Green and White started the conference slate 0-9.
Mike Talley (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale ABT (Duquesne)) led the Eagles with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while knocking down seven of his nine free throw attempts. Karrington Ward (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township (Moraine Valley C.C.)) recorded all 12 of his points in the first half, while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds and blocking a pair of KSU shots. Jodan Price (Indianapolis, Ind.-Detroit Country Day (DePaul)) added seven points off the bench while Anali Okoloji (Brooklyn, N.Y.-Impact Basketball Academy (George Mason)) and Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College HS) chipped in with six. As a team, the Eagles shot 38.9 percent from the floor, while hitting on just 3-of-13 shots from beyond the arc.
For Kent State, Chris Ortiz was the difference maker, scoring 19 on 6-of-8 opportunities, while recording a pair of assists, a block and a steal, while Jimmy Hall added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Derek Jackson knocked down four three-pointers on his way to scoring 14 points in the game. The Golden Flashes shot 42.3 percent in the game, hitting 35.3 percent of their three-point shots.
Eastern saw Kent State open up the game with a corner three by Ortiz but in the ensuing possession, Ward responded with a three ball of his own to even things up at three. The Eagles and Golden Flashes began to trade points, before the Green and White went on a quick 10-0 run over a four minute span to push the Eagles' lead to eight, 15-7.
Kent State responded by scoring the next four points, coming within four, 15-11, with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half. The high didn't last long for KSU as the Eagles went on a 13-2 run, and took their biggest lead of the game, 31-15, with 6:49 left on the clock, but the Golden Flashes didn't go away. Kent scored the next eight points to cut the Eagles' lead in half, 31-23. The two squads went back-and-forth through the final five minutesof the first half and the Green and White saw itself ahead by eight with under 30 seconds on the clock. Talley allowed the clock to dwindle to eight seconds and attacked the rim, finishing on a contested layup to give the Green and White a 37-27 lead at the break.
Ward led the Eagles in the opening 20 minutes, scoring 12 points and pulling down our rebounds, while Okoloji added six. Eastern outrebounded the Golden Flashes 20-12 in the first half, holding the Golden Flashes' top two scorers to just three points in the frame. The Eagles shot 51.7 percent from the floor, while knocking down 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. Kent State was held to 36 percent rom the floor, while hitting 42.9 percent of its shots in the first half.
The second half started rough or the Eagles as the Golden Flashes came out on a 16-3 run, taking their first lead since the 19:47 mark in the first half. Following the quick start for KSU, the Eagles struggled, going just 2-for-9 from the floor during that stretch, before Kent continued to pour on the offense, taking a nine point lead, 51-42, a jumper from Jimmy Hall at the 9:50 mark.
Looking at a nine-point deficit, Talley put the team on his back, scoring four-straight to bring EMU within five at the 7:52 mark. Eastern was unable to continue to get to the rim, going scoreless over the next three minutes, while KSU was able to push the lead back to nine, with just under five left in the contest.
Bond broke the seal, scoring the first points of his career when he drew a foul and knocked down a pair of free throws, sparking an 8-0 run to get the Eagles within one, 55-54. Ortiz knocked down a contested jumper for Kent to put the Golden Flashes back up three. Eastern came back within one, but Kent State would knock down their free throws down the stretch to ice the game as EMU came up just short, 65-59, at the M.A.C. Center.
Eastern will return to action Saturday, Jan. 17, when it opens up a doubleheader at the EMU Convocation Center. At noon, the Eagles will take the floor versus Northern Illinois before the EMU women's basketball team square off with Bowling Green following the conclusion of the men's game.
