Four Eagle Baseball Players Named Academic All-MAC

The honor marks the second time seniors Lee Longo, Sam Ott and Adam Sonabend have been recognized, while junior John Rubino garnered the honor for the first time

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan Univeristy baseball team had four student-athletes named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team, while 13 members of the squad were named to the honorable mention list announced by the league office Monday, July 14.

The honor marks the second time seniors Lee Longo, Sam Ott and Adam Sonabend have been recognized, while junior John Rubino garnered the honor for the first time after being named to the honorable mention list in the 2013 season.  

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

Longo capped off his career at Eastern Michigan as the team leader in multiple hitting categories, pacing the Green and White in batting average (.379), hits (75), RBI (49), total bases (108), doubles (20), triples (2), hit by pitch (13), slugging percentage (.545), and on-base percentage (.448). The Mayfield, Ohio native was a threat at the plate with runners in scoring posistion, hitting .500 (37-for-74), incluing a .706 (12-for-17) clip of knocking in the runner on third with less than two outs. The senior infielder hit at an impressive .486 rate (34-for-70) with two outs in the inning while driving in 26 RBI. Longo not only led the Eagles, but led the conference in batting average (.379) and doubles (20) as both marks rank in the top 30 in the country.  Longo finished his final season donning the Green and White with 24 multi-hit games as well as 14 multi-RBI games as he was a two-time MAC West Player of the Week (Feb. 17, Feb. 24) honoree and a Second Team All-MAC selection. The senior infielder etched his name in EMU laurels, ranking fourth in career doubles (53) and at-bats (733), while ranking fifth in career hits (233) and RBI (147).

Ott finished his career with EMU holding the fifth-longest active streak in the nation starting the final 181 games of his career. The Canton, Mich. native finished the season with a .311 batting average which included 15 extra base hits while leading the team in runs scored (45) and walks (34). The senior outfielder posted 20 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games throughout his final season, while reaching base on 20-straight occasions during the season. Ott ranks fifth in the EMU record books with 51 career doubles and 119 walks, while ranking third in the MAC in the 2014 season wtih 45 runs scored.

Sonabend played in 49 games, making 47 starts primarily behind the plate for the Eagles. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native finished second on the team in doubles with 14 while recording 29 RBI and posting nine multi-RBI games. Defensively, the senior catcher threw out 16 baserunners attempting to steal. Sonabend had an impressive outing for the Green and White against Northern Kentucky (March 15) going 7-for-9 at the plate.

Rubino rounds out the list of Eagles after starting 52 games and finishing second on the team in nearly every hitting category, batting .330 with 34 RBI and a slugging percentage of .401. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native led the team on the bases with 23 steals, cracking the top-50 in the nation and posted the longest hitting streak on the team with 12 games. For his efforts on the field and in the classroom, Rubino garnered Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors.

Senior Paul Schaak and junior Ben Dartnell grabbed honorable mention honors for the second time in their careers, while Zane Birchler, Dae Bowden, Devon Bronson, Kristian Calibuso, Adam Dennison, Marquise Gill, Ryan Lavoie, Mitchell McGeein, Michael Mioduszewski, Nick Rotola, and Steve Weber were recognized for the first time on the honorable mention list.
