EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team kicked off the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships with one event on the track in the opening day. The 2014 Mid-American Conference Track and Field Championships MVP, Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42), represented the Green and White in the semifinal heat of the 3000m steeplechase, taking 15th.
Throughout the majority of the race, Voronko held with the pack of runners in the first heat, save for the substantial lead created by frontrunner and top qualifier Rachel Sorna of Cornell. However, when distance was created in the final kilometer of the race, the junior fell to the ninth spot, finishing in 10:12.83. Her performance is better than that of the 2013 campaign's NCAA Championship appearance, but did not put her into the top-12 times that qualify to Friday's championship round.
Voronko will have one more year in her EMU career after finishing an exceptional junior season. Throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons, the Russian native broke five school records between the mile run, 3000m run, 5000m run, 3000m steeplechase, and distance medley relay.
The Eagles will have one competitor tomorrow, June 12, as Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) will begin her heptathlon schedule at 1 p.m. PDT, starting with the 100m hurdles. Chauchard will also compete in the high jump, shot put, and 200m dash before taking a brief break until Friday, when she will finish her remaining three events.
Results from the second day of action at Hayward Field will be available through flashresults.com, while ESPN3 will carry the live broadcast both on television and through WatchESPN.
