John Rubino tallied three hits, while Michael Mioduszewski notched one hit for the Eagles and brought in two runs
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team came away with a game two victory against Western Michigan University, May 3. The Eagles (17-28, 4-16 MAC) out-hit the Broncos (18-24, 7-13 MAC), 10-6, to earn the 6-3 Mid-American Conference contest victory in the Saturday afternoon game at Homer Stryker Field.
John Rubino and Lee Longo combined for half of the Eagles' hits going 3-for-4 and 2-for-3 at the plate, respectively. Redshirt-freshman Michael Mioduszewski notched one hit for the Eagles, and brought in two runs, while Ty Gilmore and Austin Wilson each drove in one run apiece. Senior left-hander Paul Schaak (1-2) tossed seven innings, allowing just four hits and two run, while Ryan Lavoie and Charlie Land each hurled one inning in relief for Eastern Michigan.
Kurt Hoekstra led the Broncos offense with one hit and two RBI, while senior Dan Shutes had half of Western's hits, going 3-for-4 at the plate. First baseman Hunter Prince was the only other Bronco to tally a hit against the EMU pitching staff, going 2-for-4 at the dish. Right-hander Chad Mayle threw 5.1 innings for Western, allowing seven hits and five earned runs, while relief pitcher Derek Schneider tossed 3.2 innings allowing one EMU run.
After tallying just one hit through the first three innings, Eastern got its offense started in the top of the fourth with a Sam Ott double to right field while Rubino followed it up with a bunt single, moving Ott just 90 feet from home with no outs. Longo notched the Eagles' second double of the inning, this time to left field, scoring Ott to give EMU the 1-0 lead over Western. Mioduszewski extended the Green and White lead to 3-0 when he picked up the fourth-straight hit of the inning with a single up the middle, plating both Rubino and Longo.
The Eagle defense retired the first two batters in the bottom of the fifth in order, but a hit batter and a bunt single put runners in scoring position before a walk loaded the bases for the Broncos. An error by the EMU shortstop caused the ball to get to the grass, allowing two runs to cross the plate for WMU.
Eastern loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning when Rubino picked up his third hit of the contest with a double to right center, Longo singled to left field and Mioduszewski walked. Adam Dennison brought in the first run of the inning when he was hit by a pitch, forcing a WMU pitching change. With one out and bases juiced, Gilmore laid down a perfect bunt; allowing Longo to score and extending the EMU lead to 5-2.
The Green and White tacked on one final security run in the top of the ninth, using singles from Dennison and Wilson, while Western Michigan looked to make a comeback using two hits to score one run in the bottom half of the inning. With bases loaded, Land struck out Hoekstra, ending the WMU threat and handing Eastern the 6-3 victory.
The in-state rivals will conclude the Mid-American Conference series Sunday, May 4 at Homer Stryker Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
