TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Despite taking an early 2-0 lead, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to the University of Toledo Friday afternoon, May 16, at Scott Park. The Eagles (18-34, 5-21 MAC) were ahead by two after six innings, but the Rockets (22-31, 11-15 MAC) rallied back with two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to even the conference series at one game apiece.

Both teams tallied eight hits as the Eagles were paced by John Rubino going 3-for-4 at the dish. Five other EMU sluggers recorded base hits, including Lee Longo who homered for the second time in as many days with a solo shot in the fifth. Adam Sonabend also got in on the action with his 14th double of the season.

On the mound, Paul Schaak was efficient in his final outing as an Eagle. The senior lefty lasted 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Taking the loss for the Green and White was Devon Bronson (2-3), allowing two runs in the final 1.1 innings.

Toledo's Tyler Grogg and James Miglin collected a pair of hits apiece as Miglin also scored twice. Sam Shutes was on the hook for the loss before the Rockets comeback due to surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings of work. Right-handed closer Adam Tyson (3-2) picked up the victory by striking out three Eagles and not allowing a single baserunner in the final 1.2 innings of the game.

The Eagles continued momentum from the series-opening victory by striking first in their opening plate appearances. Rubino singled to left, and Sonabend reached base with a two-out walk to advance his teammate into scoring position for Mioduszewski. The redshirt freshman came through with an opposite field base knock to right, bringing the speedy shortstop in from second base and giving EMU the early 1-0 lead.

Schaak retired the first nine hitters of the game, remaining perfect through the first wave of the UT lineup. In the bottom of the fourth, two Rockets started the inning with back-to-back hits; however, the senior southpaw remained calm by forcing a flyout and two ground balls to end the threat without allowing a run.

After Eastern ended the Toledo threat in the fourth, the lead doubled with one swing of the bat in the top of the fifth. On a 2-2 count with two outs, Longo blasted a bomb that easily cleared the left field fence, his third homer of the year, to give his team a 2-0 cushion. In the bottom half of the inning, Schaak found himself in trouble with two Rockets on base and nobody out. Nonetheless, he was able to work his way out of the jam and keep the Rockets off the scoreboard.

Toledo tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh with two runs on two hits and three walks. With two walks and one hit, the Rockets finally scored off Schaak, forcing the lefty to exit in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. Following a bases-load walk by freshman Layne Gusler, Bronson entered the contest out of the bullpen and struck out Zuchowski on a nasty slider to leave the bases full of Rockets.

The Eagles threatened to break the tie as a Sonabend double put runners on second and third with one out in the top of the eighth. With the UT infield playing in towards the plate, a groundball to second brought the ball home for a bang-bang play that did not go Eastern's way as Marquise Gill was called out at the dish. Sonabend advanced to third, but the senior was stranded 90 feet away from home as the contest remained at a 2-2 standstill.

A leadoff triple followed by a single up the middle gave Toledo its first lead of the game, 3-2, in the bottom of the eighth. Another base hit scored a Rocket, bringing the deficit to two runs heading into the final inning. The Eagles were retired in order as Toledo evened the series with the two-run decision.

EMU baseball will close out the 2014 campaign by facing the Rockets one last time, May 17, in the rubber match at Scott Park. Freshman Tyler Russell will make the final start for the Green and White, while Toledo will counter with right-handed sophomore Caleb Schillace. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. and can be heard on the airwaves of Eagle All-Access.
