Three Eagles Named to Academic All-MAC Team

Dorszewski, Hulvey, and Swartz honored by conference
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference has announced its recipients for the Academic All-MAC teams for the 2013-14 women's swimming and diving season Wednesday, April 30. Eastern Michigan University's squad placed three athletes on the academic list while an additional six Eagles were named honorable mention.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season only are considered.
Miami University holds the standard for most athletes on the list with seven RedHawks named to the Academic All-MAC team, followed by Ball State University (5), 2014 MAC Champions the University of Akron (4), and EMU (3). Bowling Green sTATE University, the University at Buffalo, Ohio University, and the University of Toledo all placed two athletes on the conference list. The 2013-14 season's Eagle honorees are Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine), Danielle Hulvey (Pickerington, Ohio-Central), and Jackie Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville).
Dorszewski earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career after capping off a stellar junior season. The Palatine, Ill. native was named to the All-MAC Second Team at the 2014 MAC Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb. 27-March 1. The junior wrote her name atop EMU laurels in the 100 breast after claiming third with a 1:02.22 finish, while her fourth-place time of 2:15.48 earned her the second spot on the all-time list. Dorszewski was the only Eagle to notch a pair of NCAA B-cut times at the conference meet. She was dominant in the 100 breast throughout the regular season, claiming victory in 11 of her 12 appearances, while picking up an additional seven wins in the 200 breast. The junior holds a 3.47 GPA in speech pathology.
The only returner to the Academic All-MAC team from the previous season, Hulvey earns the honor for the second time in her career. A biology major with a 3.52 GPA, the redshirt-senior was an All-MAC First Team honoree after being named the MAC's Most Outstanding Diver for the second consecutive season. She finished first in the 1-meter dive at the MAC Championships and took fourth in the 3-meter dive. In her nine times contesting the 1-meter dive during the regular season, Hulvey won the event a total of eight times, and she also claimed victory on the 3-meter springboard six times. Her season-high score on the 1-meter springboard came against Wayne State, Jan. 24, when she recorded a 349.13, and her season-high 342.70 in the 3-meter dive was against Ball State, Jan. 25. Hulvey ended her career as an Eagle with a pair of seventh-place finishes at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, March 13-14.
After garnering Academic All-MAC honorable mention last season, Swartz closed out her senior campaign with the final spot for the Eagles on the conference list. The Centerville, Ohio native finished seventh in the 200 fly and sixth in the 100 fly at the 2014 MAC Championships and swam in the 200 free and 400 medley relays at the conference meet Swartz was another member of the Green and White to etch her name into the record books as her time of 55.11 in the 100 fly claimed the top spot on the all-time list. Throughout the season, she won the 100 fly on three occasions and was a consistent member of the 200 medley relay A team. She maintains a 3.70 in exercise science.
The Eagles had an additional seven members of the team named to the honorable mention list, as Audra Burtch (Goshen, Ind.-Concord), Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea), Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel), Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet), Melynee Saya (Nashua, N.H.-Nashua), and Karly Taylor (Munster, Ind.-Munster) all earned the accolade.
Burtch was the primary distance performer for the Eagles, winning the 1000 free in three different meets and taking fifth in the 1650 free at the MAC Championships. She holds a 3.83 in exercise science. A consistent diver behind Hulvey, Dark finished in the top-four in either the 1 or 3-meter dive in eight meets, claiming a victory on the 1-meter twice and the 3-meter on three occasions. The local product from Chelsea, Mich. is majoring in exercise science with a 3.60 GPA. Detro was a force for the Green and White in the 200 free, taking first or second in six meets. She maintains a 3.23 GPA. An international business major with a 3.32 GPA, Ghaffari competed in five events for the Eagles at the conference meet and was a consistent member of the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay A teams. Saya dove for the Green and White in eight meets, winning the 1-meter dive against Toledo, Nov. 16, and took first in the 3-meter dive at the EMU Invitational, Dec. 6-7. She maintains a 3.36 GPA in exercise science. The final honorable mention member, Taylor majors in exercise science and holds a 3.48 GPA. The junior was a staple of the diving lineup throughout the season, notching season-bests on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards against Ball State and Wayne State, respectively.
