YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
Cy Maughmer (Glendale, Ariz.-Apache Junction (Glendale C.C.)), a senior captain on the 2013 Eastern Michigan University football team was selected to the 2014 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, the organization announced  Tuesday, April 29. The society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career. Maughmer is one-of-10 student-athletes from a Mid-American Conference institution on the society's list.

A total of 838 players from 267 schools qualified for membership in the society's eighth year, setting a new record for the number of members in the history of the program, which began in 2007. Qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include: Being a starter or a significant contributor in one's last year of eligibility (or a senior who has declared for the NFL Draft) at an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university; Achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study; and meeting all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.

Maughmer qualified for the membership as an important piece to the EMU defense as well as boasting a 3.98 GPA as a secondary education major. In his final season donning the Green and White, Maughmer was the anchor of the EMU defense, starting all 11 games he appeared in for the Eagles. The defensive lineman made 32 tackles on the year, including 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles-for-loss in EMU's victory over Howard, Aug. 31. In his final season with the Eagles, Maughmer helped the Green and White to 22 sacks, the most by an EMU squad since 2000 and the ninth-most all-time.

Throughout his two-year career at Eastern, the junior college transfer recorded 63 tackles in 23 games, including a forced fumble and fumble recovery against Ohio (Nov. 1, 2012). Last season, he tallied two tackles behind the line of scrimmage as well as a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The senior defensive lineman's success on the field and in the classroom allowed him to capture the Elton J. Rynearson Scholar-Athlete Award, Academic All-MAC honors as well as Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Football Second Team honors.

"We continue to raise the bar each year for the number of student-athletes who qualify for membership in the Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "The Hampshire Honor Society plays an important role in highlighting that college football players clearly play a leadership role in the classroom as well as on the playing field. We congratulate each of these young men for their commitment to excellence."

As an inductee of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, Maughmer is eligible for multiple awards given out by the organization. Currently, the NFF distributes more than $300,000 a year at the national level through the program to 16 individuals. Each winner of a National Scholar-Athlete Award receives an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. Additionally, the William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth and hosted at the New York Athletic Club, is given to one member of each year's class as the absolute best. The winner of the Campbell Trophy, claimed by All-American guard John Urschel (Penn State) in 2013, receives a total scholarship of $25,000 and a 24-inch, 25-pound bronze trophy.
