DES MOINES, Iowa/HILLSDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—
Eastern Michigan University's men's track team wrapped up another long day of competition in both Des Moines, Iowa and Hillsdale, Mich. with the first day of competition in the Drake Relays and the second portion of the Hillsdale Gina Relays, April 25.

The performance of the day was undoubtedly the 4x100m relay, in which the team of Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower), Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay), Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior) and Chris Scott (Holt, Mich.-Holt) broke the EMU record in the qualifying heat of the competition, finishing fifth in 40.04 seconds.  The time busted open a record that had stood for 25 years, when Wayne Boyd, Dazel Jules, Ed Smith, and Chuck Wilson ran a time of 40.11 in 1989.   "Breaking this record has been a goal of ours," beamed Head Coach John Goodridge, "and I can't express how happy I am for these EMU men and their coach, Sterling Roberts."

The Eagles had similar success in the 4x400m relay, qualifying for the finals round after a seventh-place finish in 3:06.54 thanks to Bolton, Brown, Elam, and Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wisc.-Bradford).  The mark is a season-best and also earned its spot in EMU laurels as the fourth-fastest time in school history.  The time is the fastest since the record-setting performance in 1988, which holds a solid reign over the all-time list at 3:04.73.

Both relay teams will move on to the championship rounds tomorrow, April 26.  The 4x100m is slated for a 11:10 a.m. CT start, while the 4x400m is scheduled for 3:20 p.m. CT.  The Eagles will go up against teams from No. 13 Baylor, Illinois, No. 4 Arkansas, Purdue, No. 6 Georgia, Iowa, and No. 12 Nebraska in the 4x100m relay, while the field for the 4x400m relay will consist of Texas Christian, Baylor, Notre Dame, Arkansas, Illinois, Nebraska, and Georgia.

Two other athletes competed for the Green and White in Des Moines, as Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior) took 23rd in the preliminary round of the 110m hurdles, finishing in 14.83.  On the field, Max Babits (Howell, Mich.-Fowlerville) took fourth in the pole vault, clearing 5.30 meters/17 feet 4.50-inches.

Representing the Eagles in in-state competition, part of the squad continued with the second day of the Hillsdale Gina Relays.  The trio of Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community), Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Northview) and David Papenhagen (White Lake, Mich.-Lakeland) finished up their two-day slate in the decathlon.  Selvig took second with 6,509 points, while Waldron claimed fourth with 6,029 and Papenhagen took third with 4,913.  Selvig beat his previous best mark in the decathlon by nearly 250 points and notched the top spot for the Green and White in all events except the javelin throw, in which Waldron and he took a 1-2 finish after throwing a personal-best 47.19 meters/154 feet 10-inches and 40.92 meters/134 feet 3-inches, respectively.  The Eagles also took the top spot in the discus throw, as Selvig launched for a distance of 35.84 meters/117 feet 7-inches.  He also picked up runner-up finishes in the 1500m run and 110m hurdles in 4:47.55 and 15.30.

Two more events were run on the track, with the Eagles claiming three of the top-10 finishes in the 100m dash.  Michael Griffin (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) paced the team with a personal-best 10.95 for fourth, followed by Wayne Blanchard (Toledo, Ohio-St. Francis de Sales) and Pedro Delgado (Southfield, Mich.-Brother Rice) in a tight 10.99/11.00 battle for sixth and seventh place.  In the 400m dash, Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley) notched a 51.43-second finish for 10th

The Eagles continued action for the day with two jumping events and a pair of throwing events.  James O'Shea (Toledo, Ohio-St Johns Jesuit) took tied for seventh in the high jump with a 1.94-meter/6-foot 4.25-inch clearance, and Antwan Persons (Dayton, Ohio-Chaminade Julienne) placed 12th in the long jump, leaping a personal-best 6.54 meters/21 feet 5.50-inches.

Freshman Quinn Levering (Caledonia, Ohio-River Valley) took runner-up in the shot put, missing out on victory by just one inch with a throw of 15.96 meters/52 feet 4.50-inches.  To wrap up action on the track, the Eagles took a 4-5-6 finish in the hammer throw, paced by Andrew Wentz (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) with a launch of 50.30 meters/165 feet.  Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) followed up in fifth at 49.91 meters/163 feet 9-inches, and Teron Turner (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Southfield Senior) claimed sixth at 47.52 meters/155 feet 11-inches.

The Green and White will continue to compete through tomorrow, April 26, at both the Drake Relays and the Hillsdale Gina Relays.  Action in Hillsdale will begin at 10 a.m. with the triple jump and javelin throw, while things will kick off with the high jump in Des Moines at 10 a.m. CT.  Drake will provide live results via deltatiming.com.
