Manjon-Rivadulla, McKinney, Voronko, and Wolanin honored by conference
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference released the Academic All-MAC teams for the 2013-14 indoor track and field season Tuesday, April 22. Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field program had four athletes named Academic All-MAC, while four Eagles were named to the honorable mention list.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season only are considered.
Eastern's four selections ties for the second-most athletes represented by a MAC team. 2014 MAC Champion Kent State University holds the most number of athletes honored (7), followed by EMU and Western Michigan University (4); Central Michigan University, Northern Illinois University, Ohio University, and the University of Toledo (3); the University of Akron and Bowling Green State University (2); and Ball State University and Miami University (1). The four Eagles honored by the conference include Marina Manjon-Rivadulla (Barcelona, Spain-Escola University), Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams), Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42), and Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford).
Manjon-Rivadulla wrote herself into EMU laurels when she was a part of the EMU and MAC Championship record-breaking distance medley relay team at the indoor track and field championships, Feb. 28-March 1. The team finished in 11:29.96 to claim the victory, which earned the Spanish native All-MAC First Team honors. She was also a consistent competitor in the 800m and mile runs, notching season-best times of 2:13.74 in the 800m at the SPIRE Invitational, Feb. 15, and 5:01.46 in the mile run at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 9. Manjon-Rivadulla holds a 3.80 GPA in management.
McKinney earned second team All-MAC honors after finishing runner up in the 60m dash at the 2014 MAC Championships, matching her personal record in 7.54 seconds. She also placed well in the 200m, taking fifth in 24.54 seconds. McKinney led the team in the 60m throughout the 2013-14 campaign, claiming victories at EMU's home meets on Dec. 7, 2013 and Feb. 1. She also paced the Eagles in many 200m races, taking a season-best third place at the Meyo Invitational. McKinney is majoring in communication and maintains a 3.37 GPA.
The only returning athlete from last year's indoor Academic All-MAC selections, Voronko has done her part to make her legacy known as an Eagle. The Russian native broke three individual records during the indoor season, including the 25-year old mile record which was broken with a 4:39.84 mark on Feb. 8. Voronko also holds the EMU standard in the 3000m, finishing in 9:13.24 at the SPIRE Invitational, and the 5000m after taking the race at the Findlay Classic in 16:32.44, Jan. 24. Additionally, she was a member of the record-breaking DMR team at the 2014 MAC Championships, where she was also crowned MAC Champion in the 3000m and 5000m while finishing runner-up in the mile. For her efforts at the MAC meet, Voronko was named the meet's Most Valuable Performer, and she was also named MAC Track Athlete of the Week for three consecutive weeks (Jan. 14, Jan. 21, and Jan. 28). Voronko boasts a 3.77 GPA in physical education.
Wolanin has been an integral part of the Eagles' leadership as one of the four team co-captains, and she also found individual success at a steady rate during her senior campaign. The Oxford, Mich. native set a personal-best in the high jump early in the season, clearing 1.74 meters/5 feet 8.50-inches at the Findlay Classic before she went on to match the mark on several occasions throughout the course of the season. Wolanin finished runner-up in the event at the 2014 MAC Championships to earn All-MAC Second Team honors, and also showed versatility by placing sixth in the pentathlon. She maintains a 3.61 GPA in elementary education.
An additional four Eagles landed on the Academic-All MAC honorable mention list. As the team's top pole vaulter, Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa) had a pair of first-place finishes at EMU's home meets on Dec. 7, 2013 and Jan. 10. At the MAC Championships, she set a personal record with a breakout performance, vaulting 4.10 meters/13 feet 5.25-inches to take fourth. Braidic is a nursing major with a 3.33 GPA. Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P. Meyer Lyceum), one of the team's junior co-captains, competed in numerous 60m and 200m races and was an integral part of the 4x400m relays. She holds a 3.26 GPA in accounting. Another co-captain for the Eagles, Kayla Pfund (Shelby Twp., Mich.-Lutheran North) specialized in the 3000m and 5000m. The senior finished runner-up in the 3000m at the EMU Triangular, Jan. 10, and placed 13th in the event at the 2014 MAC Championships. Pfund holds a 3.46 GPA in exercise science. Rounding out the academic honorees is Rebecca Quaintance (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), who competed primarily in the 800m for the Eagles. The computer science major with a 3.47 GPA took 19th with a season-best mark of 2:19.63 at the EMU Quadrangular, Feb. 1.
