Wilson's Bat and Glove Propel Eagles to MAC Victory

The sophomore goes 2-for-3 with three RBI as EMU baseball downs Northern Illinois, 8-4

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Led by center fielder Austin Wilson, who made plays with his gloves as well as produced clutch hits, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team overcame an early 3-0 deficit to fly past the Northern Illinois University Huskies, 8-4, Sunday afternoon, April 13. The victory marks the Eagles' second consecutive Mid-American Conference victory in a Sunday game at Oestrike Stadium.

Wilson did it all for EMU (12-21, 2-10 MAC), going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run, while also using his speed to steal one base and track down two balls in the outfield. The sophomore went up against the wall to make a catch, and he also snagged a sinking ball in shallow center field. Moreover, his RBI double in the bottom of the fourth put the Eagles ahead for good.

Michael Mioduszewski and Adam Dennison each picked up a pair of hits as the Eagles tallied 10 base knocks throughout the contest. The Green and White took advantage of four Northern Illinois errors that led to four unearned runs. On the mound, Ryan Lavoie (2-2) made an early relief appearance in the first inning, but pitched effectively to pick up the win. The junior allowed just one run on one hit while striking out three Huskies in 5.2 innings. Freshman Tyler Russell closed the game out, going 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing two hits and compiling four strikeouts.

The Huskies (9-22-1, 5-7 MAC) scored four runs on five hits, including three in the first inning. Justin Fletcher and Jason Gasser recorded two hits apiece, while teammate Tommy Hook was the only other NIU batter to find a hole for a base hit. Alex Klonowski (1-3) took the loss as the EMU sluggers got to the reigning MAC West Pitcher of the Week. After pitching a one-hit shutout last Sunday against the University of Toledo, Klonowski gave up 10 hits to the EMU bats in 5.1 innings.

Northern Illinois got to EMU starter Michael Marsinek early, forcing the southpaw to exit after 0.2 inning and allowing three earned runs. Two of the three runs occurred when Lavoie came on in relief, but the runs were charged to the sophomore starter.

The Eagles countered with one run the bottom half of the inning. Rubino singled before Longo smacked a liner into center field. Charging in to make the play, Gasser let the ball roll right under his glove, allowing Rubino to score all the way from first as Longo motored around to third.

The Huskies threatened in the fourth with runners on second and third, but Lavoie got out of the inning. First, Lee Longo covered a lot of ground to catch a pop up in foul territory. Ott followed with a running catch to deep right field, robbing NIU's Tommy Hook of an extra base hit and a pair of RBI.

With the stellar EMU defense keeping NIU off the scoreboard in the top half of the inning, the Eagles went to the bat rack to score three runs and take the lead, 4-3. Mitchell McGeein and Mioduszewski produced back-to-back singles before both Eagles advanced on a groundout by Nick Rotola. With two runners in scoring position, Dennison legged out an infield single that scored McGeein. As Eastern trailing by one, Wilson blasted a double to the wall in left center field that brought two Eagles across the plate, flipping a one-run deficit into a one-run advantage.

EMU added four insurance runs in the sixth inning to build a five-run cushion. Mioduszewski singled to start the inning, and the left fielder advanced to second on an error by the pitcher, Klonowski. The redshirt-freshman came around to score on another RBI base hit by Wilson. Flipping the lineup around, Ott smacked a shot to right field that plated Rotola, and Longo's high fly to center field sacrificed in another run for the Green and White. Wilson finished the EMU scoring with heads up base running, crossing home on a wild pitch.

NIU added one run in the seventh to get within four, but it was all the Huskies could muster against EMU pitching for the remainder of the game as the Eagles celebrated another Sunday victory at Oestrike Stadium.

EMU will play five games in seven days for the third consecutive week with a pair of non-conference contests before MAC play during the weekend. The Eagles will have a home-and-home series with the University of Michigan in a battle of Washtenaw County, April 15-16. The Wolverines will host the first game on Tuesday, April 15, at Ray Fisher Stadium before the two teams return to Oestrike Stadium for the series finale, April 16. Following back-to-back games against U-M, Head Coach Jay Alexander and company will host Miami University in a MAC cross-divisional series, April 18-20.
