KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team came away with a third-place finish in the 2014 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday, March 1. The Eagles finished with 91.50 points behind defending MAC Champion Kent State University (127.50) and the University of Akron (98.50).
The Green and White claimed three runner-up spots and one individual victory throughout the eight events in which its athletes competed. Junior Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) completed her grueling four-event meet with a victory and a second-place finish, and was named the meet's Most Valuable Performer at the end of the day's events. Voronko won the 3000m run in a time of 9:36.16, while she crossed the line in the mile run at 4:53.20. Also competing alongside Voronko were Kayla Pfund (Shelby Twp., Mich.-Lutheran North) and Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)). Pfund took 13th in the 3000m behind a 10:10.09 finish, while Knoll finished the mile in 5:04.61.
In the 60m dash, Aaliyah McKinney (Indianapolis, Ind.-John Adams) matched her career-best time of 7.54 to finish second, just one hundredth of a second behind Bowling Green's Jeanette Pettigrew. Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P. Meyer Lyceum) took eighth .20 seconds behind her teammate. McKinney also scored for the Eagles in the 200m, finishing fifth in 24.54.
Senior Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) took second in the high jump in her final Indoor MAC Championships, clearing a height of 1.73m/5 feet 8.00-inches behind reigning MAC Champion and No. 3 high jumper in the nation, Dior Delophont of Kent State. Also competing for the Green and White were French transfers Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) and Pauline Chiariglione (Ajaccio, France-University of Nice), both jumping 1.63 meters/5 feet 4.25-inches.
The Eagles saw a pair of fourth-place performances on the field in Makeda DeBardelaben (Saginaw, Mich.-Arthur Hill) and Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa). DeBardelaben came close to the 12-meter mark as she bounded 11.98 meters/39 feet 3.75-inches. Braidic had a breakthrough performance in the pole vault, clearing 4.10 meters/13 feet 5.25-inches, tacking on over a foot to her previous personal-best. The mark also ranks the sophomore fourth on the list of all-time EMU indoor records. Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) accompanied Braidic in the pole vault and took sixth in her MAC debut.
The Eagles ended the meet with the 4x400m relay, in which the quartet of Clark, McKinney, Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif.-Adrian Wilcox), and Morgan Yeadon (Pike, Ind.-Pike) finished in 3:47.45. Following the meet, Voronko was named meet MVP and Chauchard was awarded with the Most Outstanding Field Performance.
As the team has reached the end of its indoor season, the Eagles will take a short break before starting up the outdoor track and field campaign. In the outdoor opener, the Green and White will head to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays, March 29-30.
