KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—
With the first day of the 2014 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships completed, the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team currently leads all teams with 40 points, holding a seven-point margin over host school and defending champion Kent State University.

The Eagles certainly came to compete in the opening day, as the team won three of the five scored events, two of which set EMU as well as MAC Championship records.  The two events that were not claimed by the Green and White still exhibited fierce competition as the Eagles recorded personal-best marks in both.

The first record to be broken by a member of the Green and White was the pentathlon, won by senior transfer Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier).  Chauchard broke her own school record previously set at the Findlay Classic, Jan. 24, when she amassed 4,153 points in the pentathlon and became the only Eagle to cross the 4,000-point threshold.  Chauchard bested the MAC Championship score, set in 2001 by Mary Varga, by 75 points.  En route to her victory, the French native led the field in the shot put and long jump, while she just missed out on winning the 800m run by a mere .06 seconds.  Chauchard notched personal-best marks in the 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump, and 800m run, while fellow seniors Pauline Chiariglione (Ajaccio, France-University of Nice) and Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) matched or exceeded their top scores as well in many of the events.  Chiariglione saw improvement in the shot put and 800m run, and Wolanin set a personal record in the 800m run and matched her personal-best in the high jump when she tied for first with a clearance of 1.74 meters/5 feet 8.50-inches.  Chiariglione finished the pentathlon in fifth with a personal-best compilation of 3,781 points, and Wolanin took sixth with 3,630.

Capping the night in decisive fashion, the Eagles set yet another EMU and MAC record with a victory in the distance medley relay.  Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC), Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif.-Adrian Wilcox), Marina Manjon-Rivadulla (Barcelona, Spain-Escola University), and Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) finished nearly two seconds ahead of Toledo's DMR team in 11:29.96, busting the previous MAC record set in 2012 by Ohio wide open by a margin of over three seconds.  The win propelled the Green and White to first place in the standings thus far, as the Eagles will enter the final day of competition with a seven-point lead on the Golden Flashes.

EMU picked up one more victory in the first day of competition when Voronko won the 5000m by just under 10 seconds over Toledo's Brooke Tullis.  The Stavropol, Russia native finished in 16:33.49, less than half a second away from setting another MAC Championship standard.  Voronko will look to claim two more titles tomorrow when she goes up against the conference's best in the mile and 3000m run.

Also competing well in scored events were Adrienne Waisner (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) and Makeda DeBardelaben (Saginaw, Mich.-Arthur Hill), who both set personal-bests in their respective events.  Waisner turned out the fourth-best performance in school history with a distance of 15.69 meters/51 feet 5.75-inches in the weight throw.  DeBardelaben notched her career-high mark in the long jump, as she leapt 5.72 meters/18 feet 9.25-inches to take sixth in the field.  The Saginaw, Mich. native will also compete tomorrow in the triple jump.

Five preliminary rounds were completed to establish the top-eight in the field for tomorrow's final heats, and two Eagles will see action in the sprints.  Aaliyah McKinney (Indianapolis, Ind.-John Adams) paced teammate Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P Meyer Lyceum) in both the 60m and 200m dashes, punching her ticket into the final heats in both.  Clark qualified in the 60m dash as well, and though she was edged out of the qualifiers in the 200m, she recorded a career-best 24.79-second finish.  Two other personal-best times came out of the preliminary rounds, as Hardiman and Morgan Yeadon (Pike, Ind.-Pike) finished the 400m in 56.71 and 56.81, respectively.

The Eagles will resume competition and look to extend their lead over Kent State tomorrow, March 1, beginning with the shot put at 11:05 a.m.   Live results will be available through deltatiming.com.
