EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team was unable to pull off an upset over No. 25 Michigan State, falling 66-46 Wednesday, Dec. 17 at the Breslin Center. The Spartans (8-3) handed EMU (8-2) just its second loss of the season in the 20-points MSU victory.
The Eagles had a hard time converting on baskets from the floor, shooting 14-for-62 for a 22.6 shooting percentage, and 4-for-22 from beyond the arc. Raven Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) led the EMU offense with 12 points, while Anali Okoloji (Brooklyn, N.Y.-Impact Basketball Academy (George Mason)) and Karrington Ward (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township (Moraine CC)) each dropped in seven points apiece. Lee and Okoloji each shot 5-for-5 from the charity stripe, while the Green and White went 14-for-19 on the night from the line. Despite being outrebounded 47-39, Eastern Michigan pulled down 13 offensive boards compared to Michigan State's 11. The Eagles also forced 12 MSU turnovers and swiped six balls from the hands of the Spartans. The Green and White also blocked eight Michigan State shots with Okoloji and Jodan Price (Indianapolis, Ind.-Detroit Country Day (DePaul)) adding two apiece.
Michigan State used 37.7 percent shooting from the floor and 33.3 percent shooting from three-point range to propel the team to its eighth victory of the season. The Spartans had four players tally double-digit points with Bryn Forbes adding a team-best 14 points with three treys, while Travis Trice and Marvin Clark Jr. notched 13 and 11 points, respectively. The final Spartan to drop double-digits on the Eagles was Matt Costello who scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Following three-straight EMU blocks and a layup from Mike Talley (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale ABT (Duquesne)) to knot the score at 5-5, Michigan State went on a 6-0 run to jump out to an 11-5 lead before Brandon Nazione (Howell, Mich.-Howell (Des Moines Area CC)) found a layup inside the paint to bring Eastern within four. The Eagles trailed by just one when Mike Samuels (Bushkill, Pa.-East Stroudburg North (Indiana State)) forced Brandon Dawson into a turnover and Talley converted on a trey at the opposite end of the court, making it a one-point ballgame.
A fastbreak dunk from Gavin Schilling forced Head Coach Rob Murphy to call a timeout to settle down his team, which proved to be helpful as Ward scored out of the break allowing EMU to trail by five, 17-12, with just under eight minutes to play in the half.
An Eagle miscue put the ball back into MSU's hands as Dawson slammed down a thunderous dunk that resulted in a technical foul, after which Raven Lee drained two free throws to cut the Spartan lead to eight, 24-16. Michigan State responded immediately, forcing a second-straight EMU turnover before Travis Trice dropped two-straight three-pointers from the left side of the court to extend the MSU lead to 30-16, forcing Murphy to use a second timeout.
Michigan State continued to run the floor against the Eagles, taking an 18-point advantage before Price swished a triple from the left corner to cut the MSU lead to 15 as EMU trailed 34-19 with less than a minute to play in the first half. An uncharacteristic eighth turnover allowed MSU to get one final shot off in the half but could not convert on the play as the Spartans took the 15-point advantage into the locker room at the half.
Eastern Michigan struggled from the floor, making just six of its 32 shots from the floor for 18.8 percent shooting, while going 3-for-10 from three-point land. Talley led the Eagle offense with five points, while Ethan Alvano (Corona, Calif.-Corona) and Price each had three. The Green and White pulled down 19 boards, while blocking four shots. Michigan State shot 42.3 percent from the floor and an impressive 41.7 percent from beyond the arc going 5-for-12. Trice led the MSU offensive output with nine points, all of which came by way of the trey, while Bryn Forbes and Matt Costello tallied five apiece.
The Eagles looked to get some momentum going in the second half after six-straight points from Lee, but an injury timeout and four free throws slowed the EMU comeback attempt as MSU lead 43-27 with 15 minutes left to play. EMU did not back off as Olalekan Ajayi (Winston Salem, N.C.-Quality Education Academy) made an easy jumper just outside of the paint and Nazione converted on a reverse layup and made the and-one shot to bring EMU within 12.
The teams continued to exchange baskets as early second half fouls plagued both squads. With the Spartans leading 51-35, Lee sank two free throws to cut the Eastern deficit but MSU responded with two of their own on the next possession.
Eastern continued to lack rhythm on the offensive side of the ball, scoring just eight points in the remaining 10 minutes with all but two points coming off of free throws.
MSU continued to put up points throughout the remainder of the contest, taking the final advantage with a tally of 66-46.
The Eagles will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 20, when they travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on Missouri State University. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m. (CT).
