ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—
Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team fought a hard battle, but was unable to muster a win during Saturday's contest against Oakland University and Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green State University, Nov. 8.  The Eagles fell to Bowling Green, 155-145, while tying Oakland, 149-149.  The Green and White's record now stands at 3-1-1 (3-1 MAC), while the Golden Grizzlies are 6-1-1 and the Falcons hold a 2-0 (2-0 MAC) record.

The Eagles won seven-of-16 events against Bowling Green and six-of-16 events when matched up against Oakland, but there was some variation as to which events were victorious for the Green and White.  Overall, there were four individual winners for the meet's 16 races.  Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) was the only Eagle to record wins, sweeping the 200 and 500 free.  The sophomore recorded a season-best 1:52.13 in the 200 free, edging out reigning MAC Swimmer of the Week Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) by .13 seconds.  The Eagles kept up their strong performances in the event, taking a sweep over both Oakland and Bowling Green as Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) finished third in 1:53.50.  Van Allen went on to win the 500 free against both teams in 5:02.33.

Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) and Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) also recorded wins against both squads, with Jackson taking the title in the 100 fly in 56.40 seconds while Dorszewski's mark of 2:20.32 in the 200 breast paced the field in the event.  Dorszewski also won the 100 breast against Oakland in 1:04.56, but fell to BGSU's top breaststroker.  Jackson had a similar situation in the 200 fly, winning over Oakland in 2:05.38 but took second against the Falcons.

Three more victories came against Bowling Green thanks to Audra Burtch (Goshen, Ind.-Concord) and Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy).  Burtch was the top finisher for the Eagles in the 1000 free in 10:30.12, finishing first against the Falcons but third against the Oakland Grizzlies.  Deacon was the Green and White's top scorer on the springboards, finishing behind Oakland's Tricia Grant in both the 1- and 3-meter dives.  The freshman continued to improve her marks, recording personal bests of 289.60 and 299.95 points, respectively.  Additionally, the Eagles swept the diving events against Bowling Green, with Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) taking second in both competitions against the Falcons while Karly Taylor (Munster, Ind.-Munster) and Melynee Saya (Nashua, N.H.-Nashua) finished third on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards, respectively.

In the backstroke races, Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) took second against the Golden Grizzlies and third against the Falcons in both the 100 and 200 back, touching in at 57.84 seconds and 2:04.65.

Some struggles were seen in the 50 free and 200 IM, events which are normally strongholds for the Eagles.  The 50 free was paced by Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergynasiet) in 24.19 seconds, giving her a runner-up finish against Oakland while she finished third against Bowling Green.  In the 200 IM, Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) was the top finisher for the Green and White in 2:10.72, but finished third against Oakland while the mark was good for fourth behind the Falcons.

The team ended the meet with a runner-up finish against both teams in the 400 free relay, with Wagner, Ghaffari, Van Allen, and Jackson touching in at 3:30.35.

The Eagles will return to Jones Natatorium for their next meet, when they take on the University of Cincinnati Bearcats Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m.  Live results will be available through EMUEagles.com.
