YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—
Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team secured a 175.5-124.5 victory over the University of Cincinnati, Nov. 15.  With the win, the Eagles now hold a record of 4-1-1 (3-1 MAC), while the Bearcats fall to 0-4.

As a team, the Eagles claimed victories in 9-of-6 events, starting out with a dominant effort in the 200 medley relay.  The Green and White delivered a 1-2 finish in the opening event, paced by Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area), Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering), Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex), and Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet) in 1:46.63.  The quartet of Haley Shaw (Fenton, Mich.-Fenton), Emily Wimmer (Hammond, Ind.-Munster), Makenzie Garringer (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon), and Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) finished runner-up in 1:47.76 to give the Eagles an early lead on the Bearcats.

The Green and White gave a strong effort in the freestyle events, led by Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) in the distance events.  Van Allen finished runner-up in both the 500 and 1000 free, but her marks were the best of any member of the team for the 2014-15 season.  Van Allen clocked in at a personal-best 10:21.24 in the 1000 free before recording a season best of 4:59.28, becoming the first Eagle to dip below the five-minute barrier for the season.

In the freestyle sprints, the Eagles saw just one victory from Ghaffari, who won the 50 free in 23.90 seconds to pace MacLean's 24.22-second finish for a second-place tie.  In the 100 free, Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) was the first Eagle to touch the wall, finishing third in 53.29 seconds.  Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) saw her 2014 reign over the 200 free in Jones Natatorium come to an end with a runner-up finish in 1:53.66.

Only one member of the Green and White won multiple events on the afternoon.  Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) was the top finisher in the 100 and 200 breast, finishing in 1:05.52 in the 100 breast before notching a season-best time of 2:20.02 in the 200 breast.  Dorszewski also led a sweep of the 100 breast as Worthley and Wimmer sprinted in for second and third.

The butterfly and backstroke events were split between the Eagles and the Bearcats.  In the 100 fly, Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) paced the field in 56.82 seconds, while Ghaffari touched in for second in 57.09 seconds.  Jackson conceded the victory in the 200 fly to Rachel Dover, but turned in her best performance of the year in 2:03.09.  In the backstroke races, Mitcheltree was the top finisher for the Green and White, taking second in the 100 back in 57.85 seconds before winning her first race of the season, claiming the title in the 200 back in 2:04.14.

Victories also went to the Eagles in the 400 IM and on the springboards.  In her debut appearance in the 400 IM, Van Allen trailed Andrea Bartel by more than three seconds going into the final 100 yards.  However, Van Allen put together a 57.37-second split on the freestyle leg of the event to edge out her opponent by just over two and a half seconds for a victory in 4:30.78.
In the diving events, Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) and Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy) each garnered a winning finish between the 1- and 3-meter dives.  Dark recorded a personal-best 312.90 points on the 1-meter springboard to win the event, while Deacon also put up career numbers in the 3-meter to secure her position with 323.63 points.  Both events were sweeps for the Eagles, with Karly Taylor (Munster, Ind.-Munster) finishing third in both dives.  Deacon also competed in an additional platform dive, which did not count towards the total team score. Deacon won the event by a margin of 22 points, winning with a score of 188.10.

The Eagles were able to end the meet with a victory fueled by Wagner, Detro, MacLean, and Ghaffari with a time of 3:29.26 in the 400 free relay.

Eastern will take a few weeks off in preparation for the annual EMU Invitational, which will be held Dec. 5-6 in Jones Natatorium.
