Two Freshmen Grapplers Place at MSU Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad completed its first tournament of the 2014-15 campaign at the MSU Open Sunday, Nov. 2. The Eagles saw two grapplers earn top-six finishes as freshmen Kayne MacCallum and Derek Hillman earned fifth and sixth-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
 
After receiving a bye in the first round of action redshirt-senior Jake Byers fell to West Virginia's Jake Smith before coming away with his first win of the 2014-15 season over an unattached wrestler. The Cedar Springs, Mich. native pinned Brian Johnson in 2:13 before falling by decision of Columbia University's Ryan Ponte in the third round of consolation wrestling.
 
Transfer Kyle Springer picked up his first three victories donning the Green and White winning two-straight bouts, one by tech fall and one in a sudden victory, before falling by decision in the quarterfinal match against Mid-American Conference foe Kyle Bauer of Kent State in the open 141 lb. weight class. Springer continued to work his way through the consolation bracket with a win over Travis Barroquillo in a 13-8 decision, concluding his day.
 
The Eagles had four grapplers representing the Green and White in the 165 lb. weight class with both Derek Davison and Devan Marry receiving byes in the first round of action. Davison and Marry both won their second bouts, Davison by decision and Marry by technical fall, advancing to the quarterfinals. Neither grappler was able to pick up a win in the quarterfinals, sending them to the consolation bracket.  Davison and Marry's days came to an end in round four of the consolation bracket.
 
Sophomore Austin Geerlings was pinned in the first round by Ohio State's Bo Jordan before earning a bye in the consolation bracket and winning two-straight bouts. Geerlings was unable to pull away with a win in the consolation bracket over Michigan State's Ryan Watts, falling in a 6-4 sudden victory.
 
Both Gage Hutchison and Cole Dillman represented EMU in the open heavyweight division as Dillman made it to the quarterfinals by way of a bye and a pin over Findlay's Cody Hogston in 2:31, while Hutchison fell to Northern Illinois' Arthur Bunce in the first round before receiving a bye and pinning Bunce in the second round of consolation action.  
 
Redshirt-junior Jacob Davis earned one win on the day as he represented the Eagles in the open 174 lb. weight class. Davis earned a decision over Ohio State's Dominic Prezzia in the first round of action before incurring an injury and forfeiting his final two bouts of the day.
 
Redshirt-freshman Blake Caudill opened up action for the Eagles in the freshman/sophomore division with a decision over Central Michigan's Miguel Silva after receiving a bye in the first round. Caudill fell in the quarterfinals and was eliminated in the consolation bracket in a 12-0 major decision.
 
Nine of Eastern Michigan's first year grapplers made their debuts at the MSU Open in the freshman/sophomore division as Armando Torres received a bye in the first round before being sent to the consolation bracket by Columbia University's JP Ascolese. Torres earned his first collegiate win when he blanked Navy's Zachary Davis in a 6-0 decision to stay alive in the 133 lb. weight class. Torres continued to make his way through the consolation bracket clinching a 6-3 decision in the third round and a 12-4 major decision over Central Michigan's Kyle Noonan.
 
Freshman Ben Calandrino also made his college debut in the 133 lb. weight class picking up an 18-5 major decision over Harper College's Corey Graham before seeing his day come to a close in the third round of the consolation bracket.
 
Freshmen Josh Evans and Ben Griffin each earned their first victories as Eagles in the freshman/sophomore 141 lb. weight class with Evans pinning Alec Benedetti of Lake Erie College in 2:45 in the open bout, while Griffin pinned Tiffin University's Joe Timjo in 1:19 in his college debut. Evans lost in a 9-4 decision in the second round of action before earning two-straight victories in the consolation bracket. The Palmerton, Pa. native first won in a sudden victory over Indiana Tech's Matthew Miller and grabbed his second pin of the day over Big Ten opponent Sean Brown of Indiana. Evans saw an end to his day in the third round of consolation action when he fell to Kent State's Chance Driscoll in a 7-0 decision.
 
Griffin secured his spot in the quarterfinals after clinching a 5-3 decision over Lindsey Wilson's Daniel Leonard. Griffin was unable to come away with a victory in the quarterfinals falling in a 6-5 decision, sending him to the consolation bracket where Driscoll eliminated him in a 10-4 decision.
 
Both Rocco Borg and Chad Decker earned one win apiece in their respective weight classes, while Dakota Jaurez and MacCallum secured spots in the quarterfinals after receiving byes in the first round. Juarez grabbed a 12-5 decision over Michigan State's Jacob Heaps at 165 lbs., while MacCallum gave up just one point in a 14-1 major decision at 174 lbs.
 
After making his way to the quarterfinals Juarez fell in a 7-5 decision to Kent State's Jariod James and MacCallum was unable to come away with a victory over Navy's Jadaen Bernstein. MacCallum went on to win three-straight bouts in the consolation bracket to take home a fifth-place finish in his first collegiate tournament after taking a 4-1 decision in his final match of the day.
 
Eastern Michigan saw two final Eagles make their way to the quarterfinals in the freshman/sophomore division when both Derek Schultz and Hillman represented EMU at 184 lbs. Schultz had a bye in the open round before winning in an 8-6 tie breaker, while Hillman won two-straight bouts in his collegiate debut. After dropping to the consolation bracket, Hillman made a run winning three-straight bouts, one by sudden victory and two by decision, to take home a sixth-place finish for the Green and White.
 
EMU will take a week break before hosting the EMU Duals and the EMU Open Saturday, Nov. 15. The Eagles will take on Northwestern University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and Lock Haven in their duals, while numerous grapplers will face off in the open event.
