YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—
Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming  and diving team kept its record unblemished against reigning Mid-American Conference champions the University of Akron, Oct. 31.  The Eagles handled the Zips in commanding fashion, taking a 223-77 advantage in Jones Natatorium.  With the victory, the Eagles advance to 2-0 (2-0 MAC), while Akron falls to 0-2 (0-2 MAC).

The Green and White surrendered wins in just two events to record victories in 14-of-16 events, and had 1-2-3 sweeps in five different races.  Once again, the team started and ended the meet with wins in the relays, this time taking decisive wins in both races.   The 200 medley relay lineup of Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomsfield, Mich.-Detroit Country Day), Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering), Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte), and Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet) touched in over a second and a half before Akron's A squad with a time of 1:44.71.  To end the meet, MacLean and Ghaffari teamed up with Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) and Abby Saddler (Chanhassen, Minn.-Minnetonka) to take the win in the 400 free relay in 3:31.74, just a quarter of a second before Jackson, Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel), Makenzie Garringer (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon), and Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) finished second.

Every one of the freestyle events was won by an Eagle, starting with the 1000 free in which Audra Burtch (Goshen, Ind.-Concord) and Allison Murslack (Gibsonia, Pa.-Pine-Richland) finished first and runner-up, with Burtch's mark of 10:29.56 pacing the field.  The 50 free was won by Ghaffari in 23.90, who was the only swimmer to notch a sub-24-second time, while MacLean took second in 24.03.  Detro completed a sweep of her individual events, winning both the 100 and 200 free.  In a tight matchup against Akron's Kelsey Ferrante, Detro held the edge in 52.45 seconds, and her 200 free time of 1:51.22 led the way for a top-three of Green and White.  Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) finished runner-up in 1:52.90 and Wagner claimed third in 1:54.36.  Van Allen went on to win the final freestyle race, finishing nearly eight seconds ahead of the runner-up in the 500 free in 5:02.96.

Jackson and Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) joined Detro in enjoying wins in both their individual events.  Jackson led the way for the Eagles in the butterfly events, while Dorszewski took both breaststroke races.  In the 200 fly, Jackson had nearly a second lead on the field in 2:05.59 and started another Eagle sweep in which Clarice Daniel (Belcamp, Md.-Homeschool) posted a career-best 2:06.55 and Godlewski was the third swimmer to finish in 2:06.65.  Jackson later won the 100 fly in 56.25.

The Eagles were dominant in the breaststroke events, taking the top-three spots in both the 100 and 200 breast.  Dorszewski led the way in both contests, finishing the 100 breast in 1:05.14 while she posted a mark of 2:20.48 in the 200 breast.  Emily Wimmer (Hammond, Ind.-Munster) took the second spot in both races, while Worthley was the third finisher.

Wins rolled in for the Green and White in the springboard diving as well.  Freshman Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy) won the 1-meter dive with 282.75 points, followed by Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) with 272.25 points for second and Melynee Saya (Nashua, N.J.-Nashua) in third with 260.25 points.  Saya led the team on the 3-meter springboard, winning the event with 298.65 points while Dark finished runner-up with 293.70 points.

Godlewski gave the Eagles their final individual win, taking the title in the 200 IM in 2:08.74.  Finishing second was Daniel, who improved on her personal record from a week ago with a 2:09.95 mark.

The only wins that the Green and White conceded were in the backstroke events.  Akron's Ludwika Szynal won both events, and Mitcheltree was runner-up in both the 100 and 200 back.  Mitcheltree used an effective extension on her finish to out-touch Ashley Niznik in 57.59 one hundredth of a second.  The 200 back was a more controlled effort by the Eagles, with Mitcheltree taking second in 2:04.90 and Abby Aumiller (Canton, Mich.-Salem) finished third in 2:07.09.

The Eagles will jump right back into the pool for their next meet, hosting Ohio University in an afternoon matchup tomorrow, Nov. 1.  The Bobcats will square off with Eastern at 1 p.m. in Jones Natatorium.
