Maughmer, Mulder and Hurcombe all recognized for academic and athletic success
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University football team landed three Eagles on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference list, the conference announced Friday, Jan. 24. Senior Cy Maughmer (Glendale, Ariz.-Apache Junction (Glendale C.C.)), sophomore Dylan Mulder (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and redshirt-freshman Jake Hurcombe (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) were all recognized for their success on the field and in the classroom.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
In his final season donning the Green and White, Maughmer was the anchor of the EMU defense, starting all 11 games he appeared in for the Eagles. The defensive lineman made 32 tackles on the year, including 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles-for-loss in EMU's victory over Howard, Aug. 31. In his final season with the Eagles, Maughmer helped the Green and White to 22 sacks, the most by an EMU squad since 2000 and the ninth-most all-time. Throughout his two year career at Eastern, the junior college transfer recorded 63 tackles in 23 games, including a forced fumble and fumble recovery against Ohio (Nov. 1, 2012). Last season, he tallied two tackles behind the line of scrimmage as well as a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The senior defensive lineman boasts a 3.98 as a secondary education major, allowing him to capture the Elton J. Rynearson Scholar-Athlete Award as well as Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Football Second Team honors. Maughmer is the second EMU player to earn the award and the first since Cory Annett was a second team Academic All-American in 2001.
Mulder, who was ranked as the 61st best player in the Mid-American Conference according to HustleBelt.com, made six out of his 11 attempted field goals and converted 24-of-26 point-after-touchdown attempts on the season, including his last 18 tries. The sophomore place kicker's longest field goal make came against Toledo (Nov. 2, 2013) when he drilled a 41-yard field goal. The Saline, Mich. native had a perfect outing against Northern Illinois (Oct. 26, 2013) as he was 2-for-2 with a 32-yard field goals against the Huskies. Finding his place on the all-academic team for the first time in his career, Mulder currently holds a 3.88 GPA as an accounting major.
Hurcombe started 11 games this season on the offensive line, including the final seven games as the center. The Lincolnshire, Ill. native helped the Eagles rush for 1,896 yards and 13 touchdowns on 445 carries, the 6th-best ground attack in the MAC. The redshirt-freshman helped the team to the 51st best time-of-possession ranking.
Nine Eagles also received honorable mention Academic All-MAC: Tyler Allen (Lansing, Mich.Eastern), Tyler Benz (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine Township South), Dustin Creel (Industry, Pa.-Western Beaver), Cole Gardner (Batavia, ill.-Batavia), Lincoln Hansen (Omaha, Neb.-Millard North), Mark Ionnotti (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg), Kevin Johnson (McKeesport, Pa.-McKeesport), Hunter Matt (Wyandotte, Mich.-Roosevelt) and Pat O'Connor (Chicago, Ill.-Saint Rita).
